The Office of International Education at St. Mary’s College of Maryland is accepting resumes for the position of Office Administrator.  The Office Administrator is responsible for managing all of the international education program budgets, assisting with the coordination of office events, preparing and purchasing international health insurance for our incoming and outgoing students, and providing assistance with an array of communication and support services.  The office administrator will work collaboratively with a variety of other offices and departments across campus and provide support to the Office of International Education.

Qualifications for this position include:

– High school diploma or GED equivalency required, Associate’s Degree preferred;
– Proficiency with data entry and spreadsheets, as well as with Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, Publisher, etc.) and Google products (Gmail, Google docs, etc.);
– Demonstrated experience working with budgets and processing payments, preferably in an international context;
– Great customer service and ability to work with students, faculty, and staff;
– The ability to multitask, and work in a fast-paced environment;
– Strong verbal and written communications skills and good organizational skills;
– A minimum of three years of full-time employment in the secretarial/administration field.

Any combination of education and experience, which has provided the necessary knowledge and skills to fulfill the requirements of this position, may be considered.

Duties include the following:

・proofreading, editing, and/or drafting speeches and statements written in English on a wide range of issues to be delivered primarily at the conferences of the United Nations and its specialized agencies as well as other Geneva-based international organizations, including the Human Rights Council

・writing/editing various correspondence from the Mission, including press releases, letters, documents, etc.

・advising diplomats on the appropriate wording and tone on diplomatically sensitive issues

・some translation of speeches or documents from Japanese to English

・accompanying diplomats to UN meetings to assist them in gathering information

Qualifications:

Candidates must be native English speakers.

In addition, they must:

・have impeccable English grammar, proofreading, writing, and editing skills. Professional experience a plus.

・be computer literate, especially Windows XP, Outlook, and Word.

・have a university degree in English, journalism, international relations, Japan Studies, or other related field. Graduate degree a plus.

・have at least 2-kyu level qualification on the Japanese-Language Proficiency Test.

・have a strong interest in international affairs and current events.

・have an eagerness to live and work overseas in an international environment. Experience a plus.

Desirable but not necessary:

・prior experience working with a Japanese organization

・prior professional experience translating from Japanese to English

・French language ability

Candidates will be assessed on their writing and translating ability as well as level of experience and education.

Compensation:

Starting salary will depend on educational level and experience.

Health insurance is covered in part by the Mission.

Pension Program available.

Relocation costs will not be covered by the Mission.

No housing allowance will be given.

The Hokkaido Shimbun Press is looking for an Assistant Correspondent for our London Bureau, which is located on Fleet Street, central London. You will assist the foreign correspondent to prepare articles to be published in Japan, and handle Bureau administration. The Bureau covers political, economic, cultural news from the UK and other European countries.

The Hokkaido Shimbun Press was established in 1942, and its head office is located in Sapporo, Hokkaido. Newspapers are published twice daily. The morning edition has a print run of over 1 million copies, the evening edition approximately 0.5 million.

Flexibility is essential as though you will work for 3 or 4 days a week, you will occasionally be required to work overtime.

The Daiwa Scholarships in Japanese Studies, offered by the Daiwa Anglo Japanese Foundation in London, are open to UK nationals who have an Honours degree in Japanese.

The aim of these scholarships is to support students undertaking postgraduate degrees in Japanese Studies-related courses in either the UK or Japan. Scholars affiliated to UK universities must undertake at least part of their studies in Japan.

The Foundation supports six individuals in any given year, of whom at least three must study full-time at a university in Japan.

The Scholarship will cover university fees for the course in question, plus living expenses.
