Position: Fully Funded Volunteer Teacher
Posted By: WorldTeach
Location: America Samoa
Status: Full Time

Summary: WorldTeach, a non-profit organization founded through Harvard University, is currently accepting applications for passionate individuals to serve as volunteer English teachers in our yearlong, fully funded programs in the Pacific Island of American Samoa. Applications will be accepted until October 15th, 2015 and volunteers will depart approximately at the beginning of January 2016.

Volunteers are full time English teachers in public high schools. While volunteers share their skills and knowledge with their students and communities, they also gain cultural understanding, foreign language skills, develop leadership experience, and learn how to be more adaptable and resourceful. The American Samoa Department of Education has sought out WorldTeach volunteers because there is a lack of licensed English teachers in American Samoa.

With 23 programs in 16 different countries, including year, semester, and summer programs, there are plenty of options to find a program that fits your skills and interests. WorldTeach offers excellent professional development and has more than 25 years of experience successfully preparing, training, placing, and supporting volunteers around the world. Funded and partially funded programs are available for yearlong and semester programs.

Our current yearlong programs are in American Samoa, Chile, China, Colombia, Costa Rica, Ecuador, Guyana, Marshall Islands, Micronesia (Pohnpei, Kosrae and Chuuk), Namibia, Tanzania, and Thailand. We also have semester programs in Namibia and Ecuador, and summer programs in China, Costa Rica, Ecuador, Morocco, Namibia, Nepal, Poland and South Africa.

The American Samoa program is funded by their Department of Education, including round-trip international airfare from a designated U.S. departure city.

Job: English Instructor/Branch Manager – Jabble (Japan)

Posted by Sydney Sparrow, curriculum and content developer for a real estate school based in Virginia. Click here to join the JETwit Jobs Google Group and receive job listings even sooner by email.

Position: English Instructor/Branch Manager
Posted By: Jabble
Location: Chiba and Tokyo, Japan
Status: Full Time

Summary: We are looking for ONE teacher for immediate start. At Jabble, we are trying to make a new style of English school. Our goal is to create a school where service and quality come first, where the focus on our students is genuine, while also providing the service and professional benefits of larger schools. Our schools have a small, at-home atmosphere, and our teachers know all of our students by name. Employing teachers that care about their standard of work is of utmost importance to us. We are NOT looking for applicants that are just looking for a paycheck. We are looking for well-rounded individuals that genuinely care about their students, their coworkers, and the company they work for. We pride ourselves on the care and real improvement of our students, something that only happens when we work together as a team.

We are looking for candidates that want to work toward the overall success of the school; someone that enjoys helping people, is motivated to succeed, and wants to make a better career for themselves in Japan. A lot of English schools hire just the minimum, but we are not looking for that teacher.

Our students are adults that take 45-minute man-to-man lessons or group lessons with a maximum class size of 4 students. We also have school functions (semi-regular drinking parties, hanami parties, Christmas parties, etc.) that are a great opportunity for our students to speak English outside the classroom. Teachers are expected to attend these events and must maintain a professional relationship with the students.

This weekend I had the chance to visit “Waku Waku +NYC,” a new Japanese pop culture festival which took place over two days across multiple venues in Greenpoint and Williamsburg.  According to the event’s homepage, it brings together the worlds of anime, manga, music, food, film, and fashion via exhibits, panels, screenings, and interactive events.  This blend of pop culture from Japan and Brooklyn was envisioned as “Cool Japan meets New York’s Coolest Borough.”  The name Waku Waku (わくわく) Read More

JQ Magazine: Book Review — ‘Yurei: The Japanese Ghost’

“If you like reading about mythology and supernatural horror around the world, or if you enjoy Japan’s unique brand of horror from such films as The Ring and The Grudge, then Yurei: The Japanese Ghost is a must-read.” (Chin Music Press)

By Julio Perez Jr. (Kyoto-shi, 2011-13) for JQ magazine. A bibliophile, writer, translator, and graduate from Columbia University, Julio is currently working at JTB’s New Jersey office while seeking opportunities with publications in New York. Follow his enthusiasm for Japan, literature, and board gaming on his blog and Twitter @brittlejules.

Do not read this review.

If you are foolish enough to read this review to the end…after seven days, you will be followed by a lingering spirit which will slowly, but unrelentingly, press more and more of its weight upon your shoulders. The weight will build to an unbearable breaking point, leaving you weak and overwhelmed by the scent of rotting flesh, driving your mind to unknowable depths of madness and despair. You can avoid this terrible fate by sharing this book review via the social media outlet of your choice or by purchasing Yurei: the Japanese Ghost, a new and excellent nonfiction effort by JET alum Zack Davisson (Nara-ken, 2001-04; Osaka-shi, 2004-06).

No doubt you’ve seen or heard of such films as The Ring and The Grudge, which have served as ambassadors of Japan’s very rich ghost culture (not to mention Halloween staples), but it is likely that there are aspects of these Japanese movies that you may have not been able to appreciate on some level. This book’s purpose is to fill in those gaps and fascinate you with an expertly catalogued evolution of ghost stories in Japan, and how pervasive they remain in pop culture to this day.

What exactly is a yūrei and why is it different from a Western ghost? What’s with the white face and long black hair? Why water? What drives the yūrei to do what it does? These questions and more are answered in this book. In the author’s words, “The goal of this book: to provide this understanding, to allow a clearer insight not only into the popular products of Japan but also the history and culture from which they sprang.” Yurei: The Japanese Ghost is a guided tour of the yūrei, from their appearance, to the rules they obey, to the traditions behind these characteristics. Davisson achieves this goal through the use of highly enjoyable primary choices and sharing the fruits of much academic research.
