Joe Palermo went to Japan as a Mombusho English Fellow (MEF) from 1982-83 (pre-JET), and then launched a business career and lived there for a total of eight years. He has published a new book called No Pianos, Pets or Foreigners! My Life in Japan in the 80′s about his Japan experience where he lived in Gunma, Saitama and Tokyo.
From the book:
A young Japanese woman was running through Tokyo Station screaming “Save me! Save me!” There was a Japanese man chasing her and closing in. He grabbed her wrist and caught her about 10 feet in front of me. The woman was still yelling “Save me! Save Me!” but the Japanese people in the crowded station ignored her, not wanting to get involved.
From the author:
This is the beginning of just one of the stories from my experience living in Japan in the 1980’s, where I had moved right after graduating university. It was still rare to see an American who could speak Japanese fluently. This book guides the reader though my many adventures navigating through Japanese culture while living in the outskirts of Tokyo, as well as Tokyo proper.

Shunzo Ohno Runner Album Release
An award-winning songwriter and composer, Shunzo Ohno is regarded as one of the most innovative and influential trumpeters today. His work with jazz legends Gil Evans, Art Blakey and Wayne Shorter combines his fresh vibrance with a tapestry of soulful inspiring grooves, not to be missed. Founded in 1998, USJBF strengthens the US-Japan relationship through its Bridging Scholars program, which awards several hundred scholarships to U.S. undergraduate students to study abroad in Japan each year.
The Executive Director’s key priority will be growing the Bridging Scholars program, so our ideal candidate will be a passionate promoter of our mission. This could be a great opportunity for a seasoned fundraising professional looking to step into an executive role, or someone from academia expanding their skill set to the nonprofit sector. While USJBF has historically been headquartered in DC, this is a global search and the board will consider remote work for the right candidate.

I am writing to ask for your help in finding a bilingual graduate student or postdoc for a one month classroom in the field to be held in Japan in July 2020.
The graduate student or postdoc will travel with our students from Boston’s Logan airport in late June to Japan and spend the full month traveling with the group and assisting with logistics and translation. The following skills are required:
1) fluency in Japanese and English (simultaneous translation)
2) strong knowledge of quantitative methods
3) ability to travel and comfortably interact with undergraduate students
Compensation is high and all travel and accommodation will be covered. The program assistant must be able to start the trip in Boston. Please have interested candidates email me by 14 February at daniel.aldrich@gmail.com with the following items:

Job Title: Summer Internship Opportunity (Unpaid)

The Japan-U.S. Friendship Commission (JUSFC) and the International House of Japan (I-House) are currently seeking three Summer Interns for short-term (not to exceed two weeks) internships during late July-August 2020 to coincide with the Olympic Games in Tokyo.
The interns will support the ongoing activities of the 2020 U.S.-Japan Creative Artists Program (NichiBei Creative Artists) . JUSFC and the National Endowment for the Arts have selected five artistic teams for this program. Each team of artists from the United States and Japan are working on a collaborative artistic project that will be presented to the public in Tokyo during summer 2020. The internship is expected to be fast-paced, and will be based in Tokyo. This is an unpaid internship, and relocation to Tokyo is not covered. However, JUSFC and I-House will reimburse local transportation costs for daily commuting.
