The Embassy of Japan is seeking a highly motivated, team-oriented individual for the position of Social Media Specialist. This individual is mainly responsible for running the social media platforms of the Embassy of Japan in Washington, DC as a core member of the Embassy’s Public Diplomacy efforts.

Working hours are in-person from 10:00 am – 6:30 pm (lunch from 12:30 pm – 2:00 pm), Monday through Friday, with regular evening hours to cover events (paid overtime). The minimum monthly salary for this position is $5,000. Salary is commensurate with experience.

Please note that the Coordinator is an independent contractor to the Embassy and will not be deemed an employee of the Embassy for any purpose whatsoever. This position includes paid leave, but does NOT include group health insurance coverage.

Candidates must be a U.S. citizen or a U.S. green card holder. Screening will begin immediately and will continue until the position is filled. Only successful candidates will be contacted. Successful candidates will be requested to submit their background check information. The contractor will be required to sign a non-disclosure agreement at the conclusion of the contract.

Responsibilities:

  • Create, edit, and propose social media posts for the Embassy of Japan’s digital platforms
  • Monitor social and digital media for a variety of topics
  • Develop, manage, and maintain the Embassy of Japan’s social media strategy
  • Take photos and videos for use on the Embassy’s digital platforms
  • Other responsibilities as needed

Required Qualifications:

  • Fluent in English
  • Proficiency in a variety of Social Media Platforms (Facebook, X, Instagram)
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint)
  • Ability to manage multiple tasks in a fast-paced environment
  • A strong familiarity with Japan and Japanese culture
  • Flexibility and resourcefulness
  • Bachelor’s degree or equivalent experience
  • “The contractor will be required to sign a non-disclosure agreement at the conclusion of the contract.”

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience as a photographer, particularly event or news-style photography
  • Proficiency with photo editing tools
  • Experience in researching and analyzing social media trends
  • Experience with video production and editing
  • Experience writing op-eds, talking points, press releases, and speeches
  • Basic knowledge of current events related to the Japan-US relationship
  • Japanese language ability
