General Description:

The Mainichi Newspapers North America General Bureau has immediate need for a highly motivated, team-oriented individual for the position of Assistant Correspondent.

The Mainichi Newspapers is a major daily newspaper printed in Japan with a nationwide circulation of over two million copies. Founded in 1872, it is the oldest daily newspaper company in Japan. Our corporate information can be found at http://mainichi.jp/english/

Responsibilities:

  • Attend press briefings and events, including at the White House, Executive Agencies, Congress, and think tanks, to support correspondents in making in-depth reports on U.S. foreign and security policy and its relevance to Japanese readers.
  • Work closely with correspondents and conduct research, develop story ideas, and coordinate coverage on a variety of topics related to US politics, society, and economics.
  • Lead external communications with government, academic, and private sector stakeholders in the United States and Japan to organize interviews and gather information for articles.
  • Support article production by proofreading and transcribing.
  • Oversee some administrative office operations.
  • Perform other administrative responsibilities as needed.

Qualifications:

  • At a minimum, must have at least a bachelor’s degree. Background in international relations, foreign policy, or journalism is preferred;
  • Must have excellent verbal and written communication skills;
  • Must be detailed-oriented and have the ability to manage multiple projects in a fast-paced environment;
  • Must be able to work with tight deadlines and to persist in achieving goals and objectives;
  • Must be proficient with basic computer software such as Microsoft Office; and
  • Must be available to work on weekends and/or irregular hours as necessary.
  • Japanese language skills preferred but not required.

Hours and Compensation:

  • Work Hours: 9:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m., Monday through Friday, including a one-hour lunch break.
  • Location: A successful candidate is expected to work in the office full time.
  • Salary: $40,000 – $48,000 plus additional overtime.
  • Employer will not supply health, dental, vision, disability, life, other insurance benefits, but will provide additional compensation.
  • Candidate must be eligible to work in the United States. Valid proof of citizenship or residence status must be presented prior to employment.
