OVERVIEW OF POSITION
The Office of Student Services and Engagement (OSSE) is creating an additional Student Engagement Coordinator position with a primary focus on residential life. Many of our 1st semester degree-seeking international students, along with our short-term study abroad students, live in one of three TUJ dorms in Tokyo and Kanagawa. For our degree-seeking students, this early experience in the dorm plays a vital role in retention and a student’s overall success at TUJ. The Student Engagement Coordinator is tasked with developing activities and programming aimed at fostering an inclusive and vibrant living environment that encourages the development of students’ sense of self and deepens their connection to the TUJ community. The activities and the programming should also help the students get used to life in Japan, allowing them to become comfortable and familiar with the culture, language, and living environment.

In addition to events and programming at the dorm, as a member of the Student Engagement team, the person in this position will work with other team members to organize our regular semester activities and other Student Engagement initiatives. All Student Engagement staff support OSSE for New Student Welcome Week, office-sponsored events, and student walk-in inquiries.

PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES

Residential Life Experience

  • -lan, organize, and execute a variety of events, initiatives, and social engagement opportunities to enhance the residential experience at TUJ dorms
  • -esign and implement sustainable programming at the dorm that encourages students’ personal growth and holistic development, facilitates communication between residents and the university, and helps to detect struggling students so that early intervention and outreach can take place
  • -ollaborate with the various stakeholders – residents, the OSSE Housing Coordinator, dorm managers, resident assistants, and external vendors, to implement events and initiatives
  • -olicit and collect feedback from residents regarding their experiences and preferences to enhance programs and services

Semester Activities

-Activity-related research, coordination, promotion, and execution (including chaperoning)
-Activity registration and payment coordination
-External communication (contact point for external vendors, workshop providers, etc.)

Student Engagement Coordination

  • Help with organizing the New Students Welcome Week at the beginning of each semester
  • Assist with Student Engagement initiatives (TUJ Clubs and Organizations, TUJ LEAD, Program Board, Emerging Leaders Program, Student Government, etc.)
  • Manage and monitor budgets for activities, clubs and organizations and other initiatives
  • Update the Student Engagement social media/website

QUALIFICATIONS & EXPERIENCE

  • Bachelor’s degree
  • Fluent in both Japanese (N1) and English
  • Ability to freely communicate written and verbally with both native English and Japanese speakers)
  • Excellent PC/IT skills (Microsoft Office Suite/Online form creation)
  • Experience in event and travel planning, and related fields
  • Experience in residence life work strongly preferred
  • Able to work on weekends and national holidays to chaperone activities on/off campus and at the TUJ dorms
  • Experience of living and studying in Japan and the U.S.
  • Experience of working with diverse communities (e.g. gender, race, religion, and ethnicity) and demonstrating cultural sensitivity
  • Creative and self-starter mindset
  • Outstanding social skills and attention to detail
  • Team-oriented
  • Conflict-solving skills and ability to work under pressure during school/dorm events and trips
  • Passion for traveling and discovering new places, especially in Japan

Temple University, Japan Campus (TUJ) is able to sponsor a visa for this position.

SALARY & BENEFITS

Salary commensurate with experience. 11 days paid vacation in the first fiscal year (July-June) increasing to 20 days after 6 years of employment, plus 5 paid “personal and sick days” each year. Japanese social insurance and pension, commuting allowance, and tuition benefits for Temple University, Japan Campus (TUJ) programs.
