Contract: Full-Time

Thanks to JET alum, Michael Miller (Saitama-ken) for the following job opening at his organization:

Kyodo News, the largest Japanese newswire, is currently seeking a full-time English-speaking Assistant Correspondent to work at its Los Angeles bureau and assist Japanese reporters in covering general news stories that take place in the U.S. Western region. The ideal candidate would have a demonstrated interest, if not prior experience, in journalism and be skilled at multi-tasking, as this position requires flexibility and the ability to pivot between tasks (e.g. reporting, traveling, administrative) throughout the day.

The Assistant Correspondent will occasionally have the opportunity to publish news and feature articles that concern the Asia-Pacific region for Kyodo News International, an English-language wire service, and may be published in leading English newspapers in Japan and around Asia. This position requires a willingness to follow the 24/7 news cycle and be available on some nights and weekends (sometimes unscheduled) for breaking news.

Duties and responsibilities:

  • Brief the Bureau Chief — a Japanese reporter — on news events (e.g. entertainment, politics, natural disasters, culture) throughout the day and learn to recognize relevant news stories for Kyodo’s Japanese readers
  • Research political, cultural and international issues that would be relevant to Kyodo’s audiences
  • Attend press briefings and other events (award ceremonies, courtroom hearings, local Japan-related events, etc.), where you will take photos and transcribe audio for the reporter – some opportunities will allow for bylined articles
  • Set up, conduct and transcribe interviews with experts and/or sources
  • Be available to travel for breaking news events (local and out-of-state, occasionally on nights and weekends)
  • Perform administrative tasks such as ordering office supplies and sending correspondence to worldwide bureaus
  • Occasionally coordinate coverage with other U.S. bureaus (NY, DC)

Requirements:

  • Valid driver’s license, access to a car preferred
  • Ability to work 12-8pm weekdays, with some overtime and weekend work (scheduled and unscheduled) required

Qualifications:

  • Excellent writing, communication and organizational skills
  • Bilingual (e.g. Japanese, Spanish) candidates preferred
  • Demonstrated interest in news, especially concerning the Asia-Pacific region
  • Ability to determine newsworthiness of stories

Compensation:

  • Hourly wage
  • Paid overtime
  • Medical, dental and vision coverage
  • Paid vacation (including national holidays off) and sick-time

Application Process: Please provide us with a resume and cover letter (PDFs preferred) and address all correspondence to Mr. Takeshi Hamaguchi, Bureau Chief, Kyodo News Los Angeles. Resume and cover letter should be emailed to michael.miller@kyodonews.com. Incomplete applications will not be considered.
