Location: Sapporo, Hokkaido, Japan
Contract: Full-Time

Thanks to JET alumna Claudette Chan (Ehime-ken) for the following job opening:

Sapporo Kaisei Secondary School is seeking a teacher to join its staff from October 2017. The school is a six-year (combined junior high and high) school. It is a fully accredited International Baccalaureate (IB) World School that offers the Middle Years Programme (MYP) to its students. It is aiming to progress into offering the IB Diploma Programme (DP) from April 2019. The aim of this school is to produce self-motivated problem solving lifelong learners through an inquiry-based curriculum.

We are advertising for a Mathematics teacher to teach classes full time from April 2018. However, successful applicants will be employed for a six-month paid training period from October 2017, with conditions similar to the Japan Exchange Teaching (JET) Programme. He or she will have time to adapt to the school, write teaching programs and assist with other classes. Should the successful applicant demonstrate the ability to teach independently at the school, the teacher will be employed from April 2018 on annual-based contracts with the Sapporo City Board of Education. Candidates who display exceptional performance may renew their annual contracts up to four times, for a maximum of 5 years.

The teacher’s main responsibility will be to independently teach Mathematics in accordance with the IB MYP’s Mathematics curriculum from April 2018, with future aspirations to teach DP Mathematics. As one can appreciate, the suitable applicant needs not only knowledge of Mathematics but the ability to teach the English language.

The minimum requirements for the position are:

  • Undergraduate studies in Mathematics
  • Three years of teaching experience or subject-related experience (experience on JET will be counted towards this)
  • Knowledge of Japan, Japanese work/ school environments and Japanese language (N2 – N1 as a general rule, however N3 with a demonstrated ability to improve in the Japanese language will be considered)
  • Applicants will also need to hold suitable teaching qualifications at the time of employment in October. While middle/ high school teaching qualifications are desirable, due to the nature of the position (teaching subject content through English) TESOL qualifications will also be considered. Please indicate the school that you received the qualification from, the level of the qualification and the course length in your expression of interest for this position.

The following will also be considered highly desirable:

  • A willingness to live in Sapporo for the mid-long term
  • Experience which demonstrates a personal interest in Japan – successful applicants will need to be a driving force behind curriculum change in Japan, while respecting Japanese values about education
  • Experience with, or knowledge of the International Baccalaureate (IB) Programme
  • Experience in middle/ high schools in Japan and overseas
  • Experience in using iPads, tablets or other technology in an educational setting

This would be an excellent opportunity for any teachers who are looking for exciting work in a progressive environment.

We will reply to all emails from applicants that meet the minimum requirements and reference the above information. However, if you feel that you are only missing one of the minimum requirements, or that you could make arrangements to fulfill them before the interview date, then please don’t hesitate to contact us.

Please send an email detailing your experience and qualifications, along with your CV to kaisei-s@sapporo-c.ed.jp.

NB: Given that the application process will be very lengthy, please send your expression of interest as soon as possible.
