The Consulate General of Japan in Atlanta is an overseas establishment of the Government of Japan that works to protect Japanese nationals, provide consular services, and promote exchange between Japan and the people of the Southeast at all levels and across all sectors (political, economic, cultural, etc). The jurisdiction of the Consulate is Alabama, Georgia, North Carolina, and South Carolina.

As part of its mission to promote exchange and best understand the politics of the Southeastern region, the Consulate is seeking a Political Advisor.

The position is based in Atlanta (the Lenox area of Buckhead) and operates from 9a.m. to 5p.m.Monday through Friday, though occasional paid overtime may be required on nights and weekends. In addition to the salary that comes with the position, the Consulate offers healthcare coverage and generous vacation and sick leave. The Consulate is also closed for an average of 14 paid holidays each year.

Candidate must be a U.S. citizen or a U.S. green card holder.

Please note that Japanese language skills are not required for this position.

Responsibilities

The functions of the Political Advisor include (though are not limited to) the following:

  • Advocate for the Government of Japan and its interests in the Southeast.
  • Advise Consulate staff on how the Government of Japan can best understand and navigate the political landscape of the South.
  • Research political news and trends, elections, and legislation in the Southeast.
  • At times represent the Government of Japan at official Consulate functions or events attended by Consulate staff.
  • Build and maintain partnerships with local, state, and national political actors.
  • Write speeches and occasional correspondence for senior diplomatic staff; occasionally proofread additional speeches and correspondence.
  • Occasionally organize or assist with special events put on by the Consulate.

Skills

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Political Science, Economics, International Affairs, Asian Studies, or any other field related to the politics of the Southeast and/or Japan.
  • Good understanding of the political landscape of the Southeast (Alabama, Georgia, South Carolina, and North Carolina).
  • Strong communication skills, both written and verbal, in English.
  • An understanding of Japan’s position in the international system, the country’s politics (as they relate to international affairs), and the alliance between Japan and the United States.

Desirable skills, but not required

  • An advanced degree in one of the aforementioned fields.
  • An understanding of Japanese culture and customs.
  • Experience in a multicultural work environment.
  • Experience living and working in Japan.
  • Experience working with or researching U.S. policy.
  • Japanese language skills are a plus, but not required.
