Job Summary: During the past academic year, nearly 5,000 U-M students
pursued educational opportunities abroad.  Over half of these students
participated through group programs managed by education abroad offices
across campus.  In addition, a growing number of students are designing
their own overseas experiences, including research, clinical placements,
volunteer work, internships and student organization projects.  These
student experiences are arranged independently or in cooperation with U-M
faculty and staff.

The M-Global team is seeking a collaborative and creative individual to
meet the increasing need for consultation and pre-departure preparation for
student-driven international experiences.

Responsibilities: The M-Global Team works on behalf of the Provost’s Office
to provide service and shared infrastructure for education abroad and other
university-related international travel for our faculty, staff members and
students.  The M-Global Student Outreach Specialist will play a critical
role in ensuring that our student travelers are prepared for success in
terms of pre-departure orientation, health and safety planning, project
management and cultural adjustment.  This individual will work with key
campus stakeholders to design and implement a range of in-person programs,
on-line resources and consultation services for academic units and student
travelers.  The Student Outreach Specialist will report to the Assistant
Vice Provost for Global and Engaged Education.  Specific duties include:

1. Consultation: Provide expert consultation for student-driven
international initiatives, from pre-departure planning to return and
re-entry.  Target travel types include research and fieldwork, volunteer
and community service projects, student organization and project team
trips, athletic competitions, and individual internships.  Help students
navigate U-M travel requirements, identify and utilize campus resources,
register travel, obtain travel abroad health insurance, and provide
guidance in project management and site-specific background research where
appropriate.
2. Health and Safety Guidance: Provide guidance on health, safety and
security considerations for students pursuing international experiences
outside of group programs managed by campus education abroad offices.
Inform the development of individual and group safety plans and and route
them for review/approval by the Senior Advisor for International Health,
Safety and Security and the International Travel Oversight Committee when
needed.  Utilize the University’s M-Compass education abroad system to
track requirements for travelers in U-M warning/restriction locations.
Liaise with campus units as needed to address student health and safety
needs.  Serve on the Provost’s Office emergency response team, share
coverage for after-hours emergency calls and assist with incident reporting.
3. Pre-Departure Preparation: Gather input from key campus stakeholders
in order to design and implement robust pre-departure preparation programs
and tools for student travelers.  This work will include creating and
running in-person orientation programs, travel planning workshops, on-line
resources, and on-demand presentations for unit-level orientation
activities.  Key content areas may include developing country/regional
knowledge; navigating cultural transitions; understanding ethics and
reciprocity in community-based work; conducting location-specific needs
assessments, mitigating risk and addressing health concerns; preparing for
emergencies; and facilitating peer-to-peer networking within our domestic
and international student populations.
4. Program Leader Preparation: Co-develop and deliver informational
workshops and training programs for faculty and staff members leading
students abroad or supervising student fieldwork overseas.  Key content
areas include compliance with U-M international travel policies; emergency
communication plans; Title IX/Clery reporting roles; and strategies for
managing student group dynamics and debriefings.
5. Outreach: Manage campus-wide outreach programs and marketing
campaigns and develop promotional materials to complement unit-level
efforts to support education abroad and travel safety.   Utilize social
media, targeted email, class visits, campus events and other outlets to
raise awareness about U-M international travel resources and student
opportunities.  With input from campus stakeholders, design and implement
workshops and events to support the successful reentry and/or career
integration of international experiences.  Produce reports and
presentations that highlight co-curricular education abroad experiences
across campus.

Regular office hours are 8:00am – 5:00pm Monday through Friday, but flexibility will be required to cover evening and weekend responsibilities for student programs, emergency phone coverage and crisis management. Occasional travel will be required for professional meetings or off-site training.

Required Qualifications: Demonstrated experience in project management, international program coordination and/or university-level student advising.  Relevant experience living, working or studying outside the United States.  Familiarity with travel safety and security resources and best practices in education abroad.  Excellent communication skills and a collaborative approach to program design and problem-solving.  Sense of humor, flexibility, and the capacity to successfully multi-task in a fast-paced environment.  Bachelor’s degree or equivalent combination of skills and experience.  A Master’s degree, preferably in higher education, international studies or related field is desired.
