Overview: The English Language Fellow Program promotes English language learning around the world and fosters mutual understanding between the people of the United States and people of other countries. The program places highly qualified teachers in paid professional positions at projects initiated by U.S. embassies in all regions of the world. Fellows improve English language education abroad and contribute to cross-cultural awareness throughout the world. Assignments are for a 10-month period typically beginning in September 2016.

As a premier, competitive opportunity to work on TESL/TEFL projects in developing countries, the program has an impact not only on the institutions that host Fellows but also on the Fellows themselves. It is an opportunity for ESL teachers to enhance their professional careers and build their professional portfolio.

The English Language Fellow Program is funded by the U.S. Department of State, Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs. Approximately 100 positions are available for the 2016-2017 academic year. The priority deadline is November 30, 2015.

Eligibility: To apply to the program, applicants must demonstrate

  • U.S. Citizenship
  • Graduate level degree in TESOL, applied linguistics, or a field related to English language teaching
  • Two years’ classroom TESOL (ESL and/or EFL) teaching experience*
    • Applicants with a graduate level degree in an unrelated field are eligible to apply if they also have a recognized TESOL certification and 120 contact hours, including supervised practicum, or a valid, full state teacher certificate, credential, or licensure with a specialization or an endorsement in ESL or the equivalent.
    • The qualifying degree must be conferred by the end of the spring 2016 semester to be eligible for regular cycle projects and by the end of the summer 2016 semester for off-cycle projects.
    • If a non-U.S. institution awarded a qualifying degree, it must be evaluated by an educational credential evaluation service. Visit the National Association of Credential Evaluation Services for a list of evaluation companies.

Preferred Skills and Experience: In addition to satisfying program eligibility requirements, applicants must demonstrate the following experience and qualities for project consideration:

  • Experience with classroom management, instructional technology, syllabus evaluation/design/development, materials and/or resources development
  • Personal qualities of flexibility, cultural adaptability, resourcefulness, desire and ability to live and work abroad, motivation to be a Fellow

Candidates considered most competitive, particularly for more specialized projects, will also demonstrate some or all of the following qualities and skills:

  • Experience with training English language teachers or teacher trainers, TOEFL and/or other proficiency exams, testing and assessment, curriculum evaluation/design/development
  • Additional skills and/or expertise in English for academic purposes (EAP) or English for specific purposes (ESP)
  • University level teaching/training or adult education experience
  • Experience living and teaching EFL abroad
  • A commitment to the field of English language teaching through membership in an English language teaching professional association, experience presenting at English language teaching conferences, and publishing materials in the field of TESOL
  • Leadership skills, excellent work ethic, and the ability to take initiative, work well with others, problem solve, and show good judgement

Program Benefits:
