Overview: The Iwata City Board of Education is recruiting an “Assistant Language Teacher” (ALT) for 2015 for elementary and junior high schools in Iwata City (visiting up to 5 schools).

Professional Duties:

  1. The ALT visits elementary schools and junior high schools in Iwata City, carrying out the following professional duties:
    • Visit each school according to the schedule made by the teacher supervisor.
    • Provide assistance and support when team-teaching with English teachers in junior high school with the purpose of developing the communication skills of the students.
    • Provide assistance and support when team-teaching with elementary school homeroom teachers.
    • Advise about teaching and lesson planning.
    • Individually coach junior high school speech contest representatives at respective schools.
    • Make teaching materials and learning resources to use in elementary school and junior high school.
    • Meet with teachers-in-charge at elementary schools and junior high schools to discuss and plan lessons.
  2. Assist with the hosting of Foreign Language Activity Lesson Planning Seminar and English One-day Camp three times a year.
  3. Participate in the monthly ALT meetings.
  4. Act as the instructor at respective schools in their in-school foreign language activity training, according to that school’s requests concerning the content of the training.
  5. In addition, perform work assigned by the supervising teacher or the school principal.

Applicant Conditions and Qualifications:

  1. Either a native English speaker or at least a university graduate proficient in English.
  2. Has experience teaching English or adequate training to teach English.
  3. A foreigner who can exchange information in Japanese and communicate in everyday Japanese.
  4. Likes children and is enthusiastic about teaching in public schools.
  5. A bright and cheerful person with a sound mind.
  6. Able to give undivided attention to discreetly performing one’s work responsibilities.
  7. Does not have a criminal record in Japan and is approved to actually work in Japan.
  8. Able to commute alone to each work area.
  9. If a Japanese native, has the English skill level comparable to a TOEIC score of 850 points or above.
  10. Person without any tattoos on outwardly visible parts of their body.
  11. Person willing to submit to random drug testing.
