Position: ESL Instructor

Overview: The ESL Instructor delivers the English Language and Study Skills courses at the ISC, preparing international students for engagement and success in degree programs and supporting their language and skills during their studies.

Start Date: September 2015

Responsibilities:

  • Teaching a maximum of 22 hours per week (full-time) to groups of international students
  • Preparing appropriately for these teaching responsibilities in terms of lesson planning and the provision of appropriate teaching materials
  • Establish, promote and maintain a focused and productive classroom learning environment
  • Writing student assignments and end of course examinations and related mark schemes to deadlines announced by the Head of English
  • Undertaking the regular marking of student work and providing students with substantial and serviceable feedback on that work
  • Participating fully in the summative assessment of students through the marking of assignments, in-semester tests and final course examinations
  • Providing formal, written reports on students’ progress to the Centre -Director both mid- semester and at the end of each semester
  • Providing the Centre Director with informal feedback on individual students, as required
  • Supplying final course marks in a timely fashion to the Head of English for the end of semester Examination Boards
  • Supporting the review and development of the English and Study Skills curriculum as offered within the Centre
  • Assisting in the in-Centre assessment of the language level of arriving students

Overall:

  • Meeting Study Group’s professional and personal standards as set out in the staff handbook
  • Fostering a positive and constructive approach among staff
  • Promoting student conduct in line with policies detailed in the student handbook
  • Taking responsibility for mentoring and monitoring the progress of a group of 20 students for a further hour a week, the academic advisory sessions, and preparing appropriately for these sessions

Experience Required:

  • Specialist qualifications in the area of English language teaching to speakers of other languages. These should be at the master’s level in TESOL, TEFL or Linguistics.
  • Substantial experience (3 years or longer) of teaching international students either in Canada or elsewhere.
  • Awareness of the Canadian University system and environment and of the demands that international students will face in undertaking undergraduate or graduate level study.

Desirable Criteria: 

  • Experience in the delivery on a university campus of language classes in preparation for and/or in support of the academic programs
