Overview:

The University of Mary Washington in Fredericksburg, VA, I would like to draw your attention to an opening for an International Student Advisor within our Center for International Education.

The Center for International Education (CIE) strives to provide quality international education opportunities to students and faculty. Of equal importance, CIE programs make the University of Mary Washington (UMW) accessible to capable students from around the world and ensure they have quality academic experiences. Recruiting more international students to the campus is a charge included in the UMW Strategic Plan, and the critical support services and compliance with the federal immigration regulatory processes provided by this position and others within CIE and the Office of Admissions are integral to UMW’s ability to have an international student population. 

This multi-faceted position is located within the CIE and is responsible for mastery of a complex body of technical knowledge specific to federal regulations that govern international student and exchange visitor visas, as well as providing an extensive set of high-quality support services to international students on the UMW campus. Frequent professional interaction is required with federal, state and local officials, as well as with faculty and staff. This position provides vital information to assure university and individual compliance with the federal regulations that accompany the responsibility of hosting foreign nationals as students. 

The position is charged with serving as the Primary Designated School Official (PDSO) and Responsible Officer (RO) in SEVIS, upholding U.S. immigration law and regulations. The position is also charged with providing detailed information to international students regarding U.S. and university rules and policies, advising them on how to adjust and realize their educational objectives, monitoring international student academic and social conduct, and assisting in resolving problems and crises. CIE provides a high level of support to our international students and the expectation is for this position to give exemplary customer service in a demanding office environment. 

Required Qualifications: 
-Bachelor’s degree, or an equivalent combination of work-related experience, training and education. 
-Eligibility for federal approval as a SEVP (Student and Exchange Visitor Program) Designated School Official (DSO) and Alternate Responsible Officer (ARO) 
-Knowledge of non-immigrant F-1 and J-1 visa regulations/procedures. 
-Proficient in navigation and use of the federal SEVIS (Student and Exchange Visitor Information System) system. 
-Extensive work-related experience advising and providing support to international students living in a foreign culture. 
-Competence in organizing and prioritizing critical tasks and duties. 
-Ability to maintain confidentiality of records and information. 
-Maintaining accurate and detailed records. 
-Demonstrated ability to learn a complex body of regulatory or legal information. 
-Demonstrated ability to work with a complex database management system. 
-Strong written and oral communication skills, including the ability to communicate effectively with a diverse group of employees, students and the public in person and over the phone. 
-Demonstrated experience working with people from diverse culture, with sensitivity to cross-cultural issues. 
-Ability to work independently, with little supervision, and as a part of a team while representing CIE and UMW in a professional and courteous manner. 
-Experience working with international students in an advising and problem solving role and dealing with difficult, situations including legal, personal and crisis situations. 
-Ability to prioritize work and multi-task in a fast-paced environment. 
-Required to have a valid driver’s license, good driving record, and ability to drive passenger vans. 

Preferred Qualifications: 
-Master’s degree in higher education administration, counseling, international studies or related field. 
-Proficiency in a foreign language. 
-Experience in study abroad and/or international student recruitment. 
-Experience working in a university environment. 
-Experience working collaboratively with faculty and administrators. 
-Experience with Banner, Constant Contact, WordPress, and Social Media.
