Overview:

A recognized leader in engaged learning, Elon University consistently ranks as a top institution for study abroad. 72% of graduates in the Class of 2013 had studied abroad at least once while at Elon. During the 2013-2014 academic year, more than 1,250 Elon students (out of an undergraduate population of about 5,300) will have studied abroad. About 500 of these students studied abroad for a semester at one of three Elon Centers Abroad or at one of more than 80 affiliate and exchange programs in more than 40 countries. More than 700 students participated in 30 intensive, 3-week, faculty-led courses abroad during the Winter Term. Additional students complete a variety of internships and other experiences abroad during the summer.

Elon University was a recipient of the 2007 Senator Paul Simon Award for Campus Internationalization<http://www.elon.edu/e-net/Note.aspx?id=918718> from NAFSA: Association of International Educators. In December 2009, the University announced its 10-year strategic plan, The Elon Commitment: Engaged minds. Inspired leaders. Global citizens. The plan includes objectives of providing access to global experiences to 100 percent of students. The Isabella Cannon Global Education Center is Elon’s hub for international activity. In August 2014, the Center will move into a new, 30,000-square-foot commons building at the heart of the Global Neighborhood residential area.

Responsibilities: 
Leadership

  • Effectively direct the Study Abroad team to achieve objectives
  • Develop mechanisms to sustain a high level of morale, creativity, and effectiveness
  • Promote and serve as a mentor for team members’ professional development and training
  • Manage priorities of and supervise performance of team members

Administrative

  • Develop and coordinate best practices for the promotion of, application to, orientation for, supervision of, and reentry from Elon’s education abroad programs
  • Together with the Dean, oversee all externally presented education abroad material
  • Assist the Business and Data Manager in the collection, management, verification, and distribution of education abroad data
  • Work with the Dean on general issues–including, but not limited to–scholarships, emergency plans, risk management, insurance, evaluation, reentry, graduate programs, developmental outcomes assessment, “special” programs and initiatives
  • Manage at least one Winter term program and one affiliate program
  • Oversee, with the Dean and responsible advisors, the Elon Centers abroad, affiliates and exchanges
  • Work with the Faculty Fellow and other colleagues to ensure the preparedness of short-term faculty leaders and the Center faculty-in-residence
  • Respond to parent and student issues, as needed
Strategic

  • Collaborate with the Dean, the Faculty Fellow, and the GEC study abroad team to develop opportunities abroad for the faculty and staff
  • With the Dean, constantly monitor industry trends to aid in the development of initiatives, objectives and best practices for the GEC
  • Work with colleagues, including the Director of Domestic Programs, to achieve Elon’s goal of 100% access to a Global Engagement
  • Serve on the GEC Advisory Committee, the Study Abroad Committee, and other committees, as appropriate
  • Perform other duties, as assigned

SUPERVISION

  • Report to the Dean of International Programs
  • Supervise the Study Abroad team (currently 5 people)

Qualifications:
Minimum qualifications include a Master’s Degree, eight years’ experience in a study abroad with increasing levels of responsibility, ability to lead and work effectively and positively with a busy team, willingness and ability to occasionally work irregular hours, excellent communication (written and oral) skills and good computer skills. Other useful skills could include foreign language skills, ability to market programs, experience with Studio Abroad, and the ability to oversee a complex website.
