Position: Director of University English as a Secondary Language

Overview:

The Program Director reports to the Executive Director of the Office of International Studies & Programs and provides program management for the day-to-day operations of University English as a Second Language (UESL) Program. This position directs and supervises staff in the intensive English program and summer programs.

Requirements: 

  • Master’s degree in Education, Teaching or related field AND four (4) years of progressively responsible managerial experience; OR a Bachelor’s degree and an equivalent combination of experience, training and/or education which clearly demonstrates the ability to perform the essential functions of the job.
  • Experience developing and managing budget(s).
  • Experience developing ESL and cross-cultural training curriculum.
  • Administrative experience in international programs.
  • Demonstrated experience traveling and/or living abroad.
  • Excellent interpersonal, oral and written communication skills.
  • Demonstrated organizational skills and problem solving.

Preferred Qualifications: 

  • Master’s degree in TESOL.
  • Proficiency in a foreign language.
  • Experience teaching foreign students or teaching ESL.
  • Experience in managing international programs in higher education.
  • Experience with marketing and/or recruiting activities.
  • Supervisory experience.
  • Familiarity with the Student and Exchange Visitor System reporting.

Job Duties:

Program Management:

  • Responsible for the development of new programs and professional relationships that will enhance overall operations; promote cross-cultural interaction and awareness among various constituencies on and off campus.
  • Assesses, revises and develops academic and non-academic components of the Program to increase overall effectiveness and competitiveness.
  • Develop and manage budgets for all ESL programs.
  • Plan and coordinate all academic and non-academic aspects of the Program which include classes taught, student orientation and international field trips.
  • Develop marketing and recruitment strategies for each program.
  • Maintain and update UESL website.
  • Travel overseas for marketing and recruitment purposes.
  • Represent the Program and maintain a positive relationship with a variety of constituencies: CWU faculty, staff; Ellensburg community members, schools, and overseas organizations and governments.
  • Maintain the program as a language learning facility resource and teaching resource for the campus (particularly with the English Department and community.
  • Advise UESL students on academic and personal issues.
  • Resolve conflicts among students and faculty.
  • Provide opportunities for professional development of faculty.
  • Develop all aspects of new programs: curriculum, experiential activities, budget and contracts.
  • Oversees admission of students (including SEVIS).
  • Maintain communication with CWU departments to facilitate smooth integration and support of UESL students: Housing, Dining Services; Registrar; Scheduling.
  • Facilitate the practicum experience of MATESL graduate students.
  • Develops policies and procedures.
  • Liaise with the Assistant Vice President for International Studies and Programs, Director of AUAP, Director of GSI, Assistant Director of SAEP to address issues, concerns, trends, and campus wide programming for OISP.

Supervision of Staff: Assign/Schedule Work, Approve Leave/Timesheets, Train employees to do their job, Review work assignments, Develop performance expectations and conduct formal performance evaluations, Authority to conduct disciplinary investigations and issue discipline/termination (or effectively recommend), Authority to hire (or effectively recommend).

Teaching: Teach in the UESL Program.
