JobDuties:

The Center for International Programs at the State University of New York at New Paltz seeks candidates for the position of International Student Services Assistant.

Reporting to the Associate Dean of International Programs, the International Student Services Assistant oversees orientation, outreach and programming for international students enrolled in all programs and divisions of the university. These activities will include but are not limited to new student arrival and orientation, cultural events on campus and the local area as well as excursions to nearby cities. Working with other members of the International Student Programs staff as well as other campus offices, the assistant will act as a resource to student organizations including the International Student Union and other nationality/cultural/language groups to support their programming and activities for New Paltz students. In addition she or he will have extensive communication with international students including pre-arrival communication and other kinds of outreach in person, by telephone and electronically and will schedule informational workshops including those organized cooperatively with other divisions of the university.


The Assistant will be required to monitor and update the Student and Exchange Visitor Information System (SEVIS), the database for F and J holders. He or she must remain current with immigration regulations and assure compliance with the same, serving as a Department of Homeland Security authorized Designated School Official (DSO) and Alternate Responsible Officer (ARO).

The International Student Services Assistant will be required to review and authorize F-1 Student and/or J-1 Exchange Visitor requests for immigration-related transactions including, but not limited to requests for Optional and Curricular Practical Training and Academic Training, and will have responsibility for accurate documentation. As an integral part of a motivated international education team, the International Student Services Assistant will work with CIP colleagues to promote international education on the New Paltz Campus.

Required Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree
  • Ability to multi-task with demanding time-frames
  • Availability to participate in evening and weekend student activities
  • Excellent organizational and planning skills
  • Experience with international clients including students, scholars or faculty
  • Strong writing skills and the ability communicate with non-native speakers of English
  • Good judgment, ability to use discretion and maintain confidentiality
  • Excellent computer/database skills
  • Attention to detail and accuracy require
  • Willingness to work as part of a motivated international education team
  • Legal Permanent Residence or Citizenship in the United States*

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Working knowledge of and experience with F-1 and J-1 regulations including SEVIS database functions and preparation of immigration documents (I-20’s & DS-2019)
  • Experience with Banner and/or FSAtlas or other university databases
    • Must hold US citizenship or lawful permanent resident status to meet federal requirements for professional practice as a Designated School Official of the Immigration Service and Alternate Responsible Officer of the Department of State.
