Overview:

Established in 2009, the Center for Global and Intercultural Study (CGIS) was created to provide a wide variety of global engagement and learning opportunities to the University of Michigan community. CGIS programming serves students with diverse academic interests at both international and domestic sites.

The Intercultural Programs Advisor coordinates of a range of services for CGIS programs. Programs assigned to this position include, but are not limited to, those in the UK, New Zealand, Australia, Russia, Germany, the Netherlands, Poland, and Czech Republic. Responsibilities of the position are described below.

Job Duties:
Advising – 35%
Help students identify and select appropriate programs, provide information about financial aid options and the admissions process, serve as primary contact for students participating in these programs, and assist students to prepare and meet program requirements. Respond to student, parent, faculty, and staff inquires via phone, walk-in, appointment, and e-mail during the various stages of off-campus program participation including pre-application, pre-departure, onsite, and once students have returned to U of M. Promote, advise, and conduct administrative processes related to Boren Scholarships.

Application Coordination and Review – 15%
Notify students of application requirements and answer questions. Lead the admissions committee for students applying to programs, coordinate the admission and acceptance process. Collect partner application materials for host institutions. Notify students of acceptances and next steps. Verify final program rosters and student decisions.

Student Sessions – 10%
Facilitate informational workshops, orientation sessions, and return sessions. Assist in designing content and materials for such sessions. Promote programs to students and faculty as needed.

Program Coordination – 35%
Coordinate services and program logistics with program partners in the U.S. and abroad. Serve as liaison with units who have students going on programs, work with faculty and staff in these units to promote programs. Meet with partners when making visits to the UM campus. Update program supplements, cost sheets, and other materials. Coordinate with faculty, staff, and students regarding program requirements such as submission of forms, meeting health and safety requirements, and understanding program-related policies. Work with faculty on organizing, promoting, and preparing students for short-term faculty-led programs

Other Projects – 5%
Participate in after-hours emergency response rotation. Conference travel and site visits as appropriate. Projects as assigned.

Required Qualifications:

Bachelor’s degree and two years of related professional experience; first hand experience participating in or leading an intercultural program; experience working with undergraduate students; ability to handle multiple assignments for varied programs with strong organizational skills and attention to detail; ability to work effectively with faculty, staff, students, and partner institutions from many different backgrounds.

Preferred Qualifications:

Masters or other advanced degree; previous administrative experience in higher education; advising or teaching experience working with undergraduate and graduate students; some knowledge of U of M policies and procedures; fluency in a second language; previous experience working in a study abroad office; knowledge of intercultural learning pedagogy; experience with studioabroad.
