Overview:

The University of Michigan College of Engineering is committed to increasing the number of students who gain international experience during their U-M careers. During the 2012-2013 academic year, over 500 engineering students participated in education abroad programs that yield academic credit; international internships; or overseas travel through volunteer groups and student project teams. The International Programs in Engineering (IPE) Office is seeking an energetic and creative individual to oversee our marketing, advising and administrative support efforts. Job Duties:

The International Programs Manager will play a critical role in ensuring that participation goals are met for College of Engineering international programs. This individual will manage the following activities with a high degree of independence: education abroad program marketing; student advising and peer mentoring; admissions; and pre-departure preparation. The International Programs Manager will also be responsible for academic work that is closely tied to education abroad including course approvals and the International Minor for Engineers. The International Programs Manager will report to the Director of International Programs in Engineering and will work closely with students, faculty and other staff members to promote and support our programs.

Specific Duties include:

1. Design and implement strategic marketing plan for CoE education abroad and co-curricular programs and manage application cycles so that participation goals are met for each term. Oversee the coordination of outreach events, student advising and admissions decisions. Evaluate and update relevant business processes to maximize efficiencies as we scale up enrollment.

2. Support the growth of the International Minor for Engineers through creative outreach and advising. Provide curricular advice, facilitate course approvals and share options for satisfying overseas experience through email correspondence, walk-in hours and individual appointments. Enhance International Minor web page and other resources; process new declarations; maintain degree audit; track student progress to completion; and communicate regularly with students about course options and relevant international opportunities.

3. Serve as the key IPE administrator for the M-Compass Education Abroad system (powered by StudioAbroad). Liaise with U-M Information Technology Services to ensure the production of timely and accurate education abroad program information and application materials; advise on system policies; and provide training for IPE colleagues as needed. Maintain accurate student records for all programs and produce statistical reports as needed by the IPE Director.

4. Supervise CoE International Education Advisors. Provide ongoing professional development in the areas of student advising, customer service and intercultural learning. Coordinate Advisors’ projects and tasks, appraise performance, provide feedback and/or discipline, and set hours of work.

5. Liaise with the Office of Student Financial Aid as needed to maximize funding opportunities for CoE education abroad.

6. Coordinate the course approval process for CoE education abroad programs. Collaborate with CoE academic departments and other U-M units (e.g. LSA) to assist with course equivalencies and transfer credit for education abroad. Monitor updates to CoE curricula as they relate to education abroad programs. Maintain updated entries in the CoE course equivalency database.

7. Ensure the continued success of IPE pre-departure orientation programs, the IPE peer mentoring program and the Engineers Abroad Alumni Network.

8. Assist the Director of International Programs with other duties as assigned.

Minimum Requirements:

Demonstrated experience in student advising at the college level. Capacity to manage application cycles and other cyclical projects throughout the academic year. Goal-oriented and deadline-driven with innovative ideas for marketing and outreach. Experience with on-line administrative systems (e.g. StudioAbroad, U-M Business Objects, M-Pathways). Bachelor’s degree or equivalent experience.

Preferred Requirements:

Master’s degree, preferably in higher education, counseling or international studies or an equivalent combination of education and experience. Three (3) years experience in international education including; living/studying/ working outside the United States and knowledge of language(s) other than English are desired.
