 Overview: 
The Commercial Banking Officer analyzes the degree of risk involved in extending credit to firms or individuals.  The duties consist of processing and analyzing financial statements, flood certs, tax returns, appraisals, environmental, and other related documents.  This position will also manage and grow a portfolio of Member Business Loans.  This growth will come from existing members and new borrowers from outside of the credit union.  Additional requirements include working on special projects for MBL department, assist in mentoring junior lenders, attending marketing events and establishing centers of influence are required.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include the following. Other duties may be assigned.

  • May be required to develop participation relationships for credits originated by SFCU.
  • Develop new loans and deposits from existing portfolio by reviewing financials and asking for additional business
  • Develop external referral sources and attend marketing events
  • Interview potential borrowers for their ability to qualify for the loan request
  • Maintain regular contact with the borrowers and proactively provide products and services needed
  • Negotiate terms and conditions with existing members and prospects
  • Manage exceptions (Bring all documentation exceptions to date)
  • Manage assigned portfolio
  • Underwrite Commercial Loan Requests (New, Existing, extensions, Reviews, …)
  • Research market conditions and proper due diligence on all loan requests
  • Present deals to committee when necessary
  • Keep past dues and maturities to a minimum
  • Is responsible for compliance with all required regulations and polices, especially with all Bank Secrecy Act (BSA), NCUA Rules and Regulations, Office of Foreign Assets Control (OFAC) policies, Privacy Act, procedures and regulations.

EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE

Bachelor’s degree (B. A.) from four-year college or university; and 2-years commercial banking/underwriting experience and/or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience.

LANGUAGE SKILLS

Ability to read, analyze, and interpret general business periodicals, professional journals, technical procedures, or governmental regulations.  Ability to write reports, business correspondence, and procedure manuals.  Ability to effectively present information and respond to questions from groups of managers, clients, customers, and the general public.

MATHEMATICAL SKILLS

Ability to calculate figures and amounts such as discounts, interest, commissions, proportions, percentages, area, circumference, and volume.

REASONING ABILITY

Ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables in situations where only limited standardization exists. Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram, or schedule form.

OTHER SKILLS

Must have personal computer skills including familiarity with Microsoft Word, Excel, and Outlook.
