Position: Economic Affairs Assistant

Overview:             
The Consulate General of Japan in San Francisco has an opening for an assistant in its Economic Affairs Section that will begin from mid October. The responsibilities of this section are broad, but include facilitating government, trade, and business relations between Japan and the United States.

Position:
The Economic Affairs Assistant is responsible for providing administrative support to three Consuls, collectively in charge of agriculture, food, health, labor, transportation, high-speed rail, infrastructure, tourism, and legal affairs. Please note that the Consulate is unable to provide visa support for prospective employees, and as such, all applicants are required to have the appropriate legal permission to work in the United States.

Duties include:
・Researching and informing the Consuls on current issues and events;
・Drafting and editing speeches, letters and informational documents;
・Translation from Japanese to English;
・Coordinating and managing several annual projects;
・Scheduling meetings and appointments;
・Responding to public inquiries; and
・Handling various administrative and clerical tasks

Qualifications:
A candidate should possess the following qualifications:

・B.A. or B.S. degree
・Professional manner
・Excellent verbal and written English skills
・Excellent organizational skills
・Strong internet based research abilities
・Ability to prioritize work and handle multiple tasks
・Ability to work independently
・Ability to understand written and spoken Japanese and translate it into English
・Proficiency in MS Word, Excel, Access and PowerPoint
・Proficiency with e-mail and Internet
・Familiarity with Japanese culture and values

Overview:
The Consulate General of Japan in San Francisco has an opening for a coordinator for public relations in its Japan Information Center that will begin from mid October.

 Position:
The Coordinator for Public Relations works closely with consulate officers and other local staff to promote greater interest in and understanding of Japan and Japanese culture in Northern California and Nevada. The position will also work with the JIC Director to handle Japan-related press and public affairs issues that arise within areas served by this office. In addition, as a staff member of the Consulate, applicants must be willing to work as a part of a team, respecting other team members and sharing responsibilities in the team and office in general. Please note that the Consulate is unable to provide visa support for prospective employees, and as such, all applicants are required to have the appropriate legal permission to work in the United States.

Duties include:
•Monitoring media organizations and keeping Consulate staff informed on a daily basis of press coverage on Japan-related issues in local newspapers;
•Contacting both Japanese and American media to attend Consulate events;
•Writing and editing press releases in both English and Japanese;
•Assisting in the arrangement and coordination of press conferences, seminars, and special programs designed for media contacts;
•Maintaining and updating the Consulate Facebook page with postings of events;
•Translating from Japanese to English for the Consulate’s English version of the website;
•Website maintenance in the capacity of Assistant Webmaster;
•Writing and editing speeches, remarks and letters for consular officials;
•Distributing publications, maintaining inventories and mailing lists;
•Assisting in the arrangement and coordination of meetings for Consulate staff and visiting Japanese officials, media executives and other guests;
•Creating and distributing promotional materials for events;
•Publicizing public and cultural programs and coordinating project activities with co-sponsoring community organizations;
•Responding to inquiries from the general public in both English and Japanese; and Assisting with various JIC programs and projects as needed

Qualifications:
•B.A. or B.S. degree
•Experience and interest in media relations
•Excellent written and spoken English; strong knowledge of Japanese preferred
•Strong organizational skills and familiarity with MS Office (including MS Access)
•Knowledge of and interest in U.S.-Japan economic, political, and cultural relations
•Strong HTML and especially strong knowledge of Photoshop and Dreamweaver
•Familiarity with Japanese work environment and operational styles
•Knowledge of additional foreign languages considered favorably
•Ability to work some evenings and weekends
