Here’s a unique opportunity for Spanish-speaking JET alumni (I know you’re out there)…

Global Brigades is a student-led global health and sustainable development organization. They are looking for a new Community Coordinator for their programs in Panama. The Community Coordinator will manage the organization’s relationships with the communities its student volunteers work in. They will also be responsible for ensuring positive interactions with students, measurable and sustainable community investments per their Community Investment Fund (CIF), measurable impact, and significant community empowerment via education, workshops and access to resources not previously sourced.

Ideal candidates will possess:

  • Ability to gather information, summarize observations and express ideas in written reports
  • Availability to travel frequently and spend significant time in rural communities
  • Experience and/or interest in assisting low-income communities in Panama
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills in both English and Spanish
  • A university degree and experience working in a team environment

The Community Director-Panama will be responsible for:

  • Reviewing project proposals with the Program Director for final approval
  • Conducting the Pre-Brigade Community Benchmark Survey and Risk Assessment
  • Conducting Post-Brigade follow-up interviews and assessment approximately 1-month after each brigade
  • Conducting quarterly reports on the status of projects and communities
  • Working with Community Impact Task Force to solidify Logic Model and other frameworks for use
  • Providing guidance to the Program Director on brigade project outcomes and impacts, both initially and during subsequent brigades
  • Providing feedback to Program Directors on the use of the Community Investment Fund (CIF)
  • Coordinating with Program Directors on proper allocation and distribution of CIF
  • Maintaining a contact database and on-going communication with key points of contact for each project
  • Reviewing all partner proposals for GBB projects
  • Participating in pre-brigade calls with campus clubs to address questions and concerns about the project and community
  • Providing a Community Fact Sheet to each campus club at least 3 weeks prior to any brigade using a Benchmark Study and agreed upon template
  • Developing a tracking process to monitor all projects and community development efforts and reporting out to the Country Director and CEO
  • Delivering cultural-sensitivity/awareness training/presentation training for new GBB coordinators
  • Interacting with students and facilitating student-community interaction and trust-building exercises during brigades
  • Monitoring communities’ comfort level with GBB alongside partner volunteers
  • Maintaining positive relationships with partner volunteers
