Job: Assistant Director for Program Planning, Center on Japanese Economy and Business, COLUMBIA UNIV (NYC)

Columbia University Business School’s Center on Japanese Economy and Business is looking for a bilingual events organizer from late December to the end of April.  The assistant director for program planning * will oversee content in both languages, assisting in event planning/fundraising, and coordinating programs between Tokyo and New York, especially for their spring conference in Tokyo.

DESCRIPTION:

  • 1. Coordinate and implement Center’s symposia, conferences, seminars, and other events. In particular, the temporary officer would organize Center’s spring Tokyo conference by serving as a liaison with on-the-ground event planning company. The officer will work closely with Center’s academic director on this project.
  • 2. Oversee program and event planning done by Center program officers. Oversees all event promotion.
  • 3. Manage the editing and hard-copy publication of Center event reports and other related publications. Manage program-related information on the Center’s website, in both English and Japanese
  • 4. Assist the Academic Director with outreach, fundraising, and related activities.
  • 5. Coordinate all necessary in-house and outsourced translation work
  • 6. Share in the responsibilities of other Center staff as a flexible team player, as needed
  • 7. Work with the Academic and Administrative Directors to develop new ideas for programs in Tokyo and New York

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Bachelor’s degree and/or its equivalent required.
  • Minimum 3-5 years’ experience in program and event planning.
  • Native fluency in written and oral Japanese required, as well as excellent English communication skills.
  • Must be a proven team player, able to work cooperatively in small groups as well as independently, manage multiple projects with changing deadlines, and oversee work of others.
  • Must be comfortable with handling budget and financial matters.
  • Must be pro-active and comfortable using Microsoft Office software such as Word, Excel (for basic budgeting) and Power Point.
  • Must exercise tact and discretion when interacting with the Program’s and Center’s diverse constituencies including faculty, students, administrators, and business and government leaders.
  • Cultural sensitivity required.
