Job: News Assistant/Receptionist at the Asahi Shimbun (NYC)

News Assistant / Receptionist

The Asahi Shimbun, a major Japanese newspaper, has an opening for a news assistant / receptionist in its New York bureau located in Times Square.  

Job Description: The assistant will be required to perform two separate duties:  news assistant and receptionist.

News assistant duties include:
-Monitoring major news events and quickly relaying this information to reporters
-Registering for credentials for events in a timely manner and following up to make sure the correct registrations have been secured in time
-Arranging travel schedules for reporters attending news events and press conferences
-Developing and maintaining contacts with media relations staff 
-Transcribing interviews 
-Occasionally attending events / press conferences and assisting with reporting as necessary
-In the case of breaking news that requires additional research staff (major disasters, election coverage, etc.), assisting reporters in the bureau as necessary (may require overtime)

Receptionist duties include:  
-Answering and directing telephone calls; taking and relaying phone messages
-Monitoring the general e-mail address for the New York bureau and forwarding all e-mails to the correct staff member
-Drafting correspondence on behalf of the bureau (including e-mails and letters)
-Fielding calls from public relations staff and accepting / forwarding press releases to reporters as necessary
-Greeting visitors to the bureau
-Maintaining the appropriate amount of office supplies and making new orders as necessary
-General office duties, such as making coffee and collecting and distributing newspapers 

Requirements:
-A college degree, preferably in Journalism, Communications or a related field
-Friendly, professional demeanor and upbeat attitude; courteous and kind phone manner
-Detail-oriented with excellent multi-tasking skills
-Proficiency using MS Office programs (MS Word)
-Excellent Internet research skills
-Typing speed of at least 45 wpm preferred

Hours:  9:30 am to 4:30 pm, Monday through Friday.  Some paid overtime and weekend work may be required.  The position will begin as soon as possible.

This position is paid by the hour (between $16 and $20 per hour, depending on experience).   This position does not offer health care benefits or paid vacation.
