A JET alum recently asked if anyone is aware of any scholarships for Americans to study in Japan, particularly in connection with TESOL or applied linguistics.

Any suggestions?  Please post in the comments section of this post for the benefit of others, or feel free to e-mail jetwit at jetwit dot com.

The MEXT scholarship is the “mother of all J scholarships”

Also you can look for JSPS scholarships, but I think these are mostly geared towards students from developing countries.

Other than that, you can ask any university admissions office about scholarships. The Ministry has a new plan in place to attract more exchange students, so some universities may very well be ramping up scholarships, although I have seen some press lately on students (mainly Japanese) unable to get loans due to the increased demand for them because of the economy.
