Assistant Director, International Student Services

Staff members in International Student Services (ISS) at the State University of New York, College at Plattsburgh are attentive to the unique needs and concerns of international students. ISS is looking for an Assistant Director to administer immigration advising and to assist with professional functions related to international student enrollment management. This position requires limited international and/or domestic travel, as well as some evening and weekend work.

Responsibilities include: Serving as a designated school official (DSO) and alternate responsible officer (ARO) for F and J visa programs; ensuring compliance with federal regulations mandated by the U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS)/ Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE); evaluating issues related to international student status; interpreting federal regulations and exercising judgment in deciding on appropriate courses of action; processing employment authorizations, reduced course load requests, extension of stay requests, reinstatements of status, documents for dependents, etc.; developing educational materials and conducting workshops to raise student understanding of immigration policies and procedures, employment, and taxes; managing health insurance waiver process for international students; traveling internationally and/or domestically approximately 2-4 weeks each year to recruit international students; reviewing international application materials and making admissions decisions occasionally; assisting with coordination of international student orientation programming; teaching a ten-week extended orientation class required of all first-semester international students

Required qualifications: U.S. citizen with valid U.S. passport or permanent resident; bachelor’s degree; valid driver’s license; experience in international student and scholar services and immigration advising, preferably in a university setting; experience creating DS-2019 documents and I-20 documents with the SEVIS database and making updates as necessary; formal training in working with F-1 visa holders and handling their specific immigration needs; ability to communicate with native-level fluency in English orally and in writing; proficiency in keyboarding and Microsoft Office Suite; experience using the SCT Banner student information system; experience teaching in a secondary or post-secondary environment; excellent organizational skills and attention to detail; good interpersonal and intercultural communication skills, particularly with speakers of English as a foreign language; demonstrated ability to manage multiple tasks in a busy office environment; and availability for limited international and/or domestic travel, and some evening and weekend work as required.

Preferred qualifications: Conversational proficiency in Japanese or Chinese; out-of-country living and/or business travel experience in Japan or China; experience organizing events such as new student orientation.
