Seeking a Special Events Assistant for the Nation’s Largest Japanese Festival

The Japan-America Society of Washington DC is seeking an intern to assist the Director of the Sakura Matsuri-Japanese Street Festival.  Sakura Matsuri is the largest one day Japanese cultural festival in the Nation. In 2008 the Festival introduced Japanese culture and arts to over 140,000 visitors in one day.  The Festival has more than 90 vendors and exhibitors, 30 hours of non-stop stage performances, and over 500 volunteers.

Assisting the Japan-America Society to produce one of the largest outdoor Festivals in Washington DC is an excellent opportunity for someone interested in pursuing a career in special events planning and production. This is a paid position.

The 2009 Festival will be held on Saturday, April 4, 2009 and will cover six blocks on Pennsylvania Avenue. In producing this festival, the Japan-America Society and the intern/assistant will work closely with the National Cherry Blossom Festival, Federal and DC city officials, contractors,  vendors, artists, and performers.

Basic Internship Requirements
–       Basic knowledge and understanding of event planning
–       Stickler for detail
–       Strong organizational and self-management  skills
–       Great team player
–       Good at taking minimal instruction in a fast-paced environment and then executing
–       Knowledge of Filemaker Pro and graphics software is a plus
–       Interest in Japanese Culture and some Japanese language skills are a plus

Internship Schedule:
Please note that this internship is a paid Internship ($12/hour).  In order to produce the Festival, the intern must commit to a set work schedule.

Starting Date:  January 5, 2008
Ending Date:  April 17, 2008

Internship Hours:
Month of January – 15 hours/ week
Month of February – 25 hours/week
Month of March (first two weeks) – 30 hours/ week
Month of March (second two weeks to April 4) – at least 40 hours/ week
April 4 to April 17 – 15 hours / week
