Editorial Pursuits #4 – Where have all the openings gone? (Long time passing)

Julie Matysik (Yamanashi-ken, 2006-07) is a freelance copy editor and aspiring in-house editor who recently moved to NYC with her husband (also a JET alum).  She has just started an internship in editing/publishing/writing.  Editorial Pursuits chronicles her job hunting efforts, experiences and lessons learned.

Warning: the following post is coming from deep frustrations with job searching and the inability to land a solid entry-level job in the editing and publishing field over the past four months.

I cannot even begin to express how frustrating it is when you check a site daily for jobs and find nothing a) that you are qualified for, b) that is in the city you are living in, or c) — just plain nothing!

My most favorite, and most reliable, job searching sites-Publisher’s Marketplace, MediaBistro, and Book Jobs-have not posted anything pertinent to my job search needs in the last two weeks. 

Of course, I know better than to blame the job search engines for a lack of open, entry-level positions. I know that so many people are out there searching for jobs and are having a rough time finding things to apply for (and that’s only one step in a huge battle to land a position at a publishing company) but it’s hard not to feel slightly dejected with the whole process. 

I’ve learned, however, that it’s better for your overall sanity and peace of mind to try to make the best out of every situation and so that’s what I’m determined to do at this moment. I will continue to embrace my internship, absorb and glean as much knowledge and experience as I can, and hopefully when I’m least expecting it, my once-dependable job sites will produce something posted especially for me.

Now that would be something to be thankful for.
