Job: 1/2 Time Program Coordinator at Institute for Medieval Japanese Studies, Columbia U.

They are seeking a half-time Program Coordinator to work aproximately 20 hours per week.  Salary is commensurate with experience.  The position is open immediately.  Training will be provided.

IMMEDIATE JOB OPENING ½ Time Program Coordinator Position Institute for Medieval Japanese Studies, Columbia University We are seeking a half-time Program Coordinator to work approximately 20 hours per week. Salary is commensurate with experience. The position is open immediately. Training will be provided.

JOB DESCRIPTION: This administrator reports directly to the Director and Executive Director of the IMJS and will have overall responsibility for the activities of the Columbia Gagaku Initiative and oversee the Columbia Gagaku Instrumental Ensemble. The position will work in the Institute’s office of 509 Kent Hall.

Responsibilities include: the administration of the Gagaku program working with the Ensemble Director, all members of the Ensemble and Instructors of the Ensemble; the arrangements of various performances both small and large-scale events where the Gagaku Ensemble is involved. (This includes reserving and designing space, hiring all necessary labor, A/V, facilities, custodial and security services through the proper channels at Columbia as well as catering); Writing and disseminating English language correspondence, PR, and other print and electronic materials related to the Gagaku Program including the brochures, programs and promotion material of all events; supervising the creation and updating the content of the web-pages on the Institute for Medieval Japanese Studies site pertaining to Gagaku; initiating outreach to promote the Gagaku Ensemble in the US and Japan (such as performance opportunities, collaboration with other organizations, composers and musicians); working in and with the Music Department, Music Performance Program and Center for Ethnomusicology to ensure the smooth running of the World Music Gagaku Ensemble class; ensuring proper listing of class in the Registrar’s Office and confirms assignment of classroom space; pursuing possible practice space on campus; administering and maintaining the instrument inventory and storage; working with the Music Library to make Gagaku resources available to students; recruiting new students for the Gagaku Program; helping to create initiatives to retain Gagaku members and continues to pioneer the Gagaku Instrumental Ensemble in New York City; working with the Director to develop and implement fundraising initiatives for both the Gagaku Initiative in both the US and Japan; and acting as MC/Event Manager for annual concerts and events featuring Gagaku.

QUALIFICATIONS: Qualifications: BA, preferably related in a Japan or music related field, MA preferred. A native speaker of English with some spoken Japanese a plus but not required. Some music background is a plus. Familiarity of Japanese culture and experience dealing with Japanese with cultural, governmental, non-profit, performance/art funding organizations. Outstanding interpersonal, organizational and communication skills in both US and Japan contexts are essential. Computer skills including MS Word, Excel, Access, Publisher, Adobe etc.

Currently, the main focus of the IMJS is working with the Department of Music, the Center for Ethnomusicology, the Music Performance Program and other centers at Columbia University to support and grow the Columbia Gagaku Initiative.
