Interpreter/Translator/Writer Stacy Smith (Kumamoto-ken CIR, 2000-03) presents WIT Life, a periodic series about aspects of Japanese culture such as art, film, food and language. Stacy starts her day by watching Fujisankei’s newscast in Japanese, and here she offers some interesting tidbits and trends along with her own observations.

As 2021 draws to a close, everyone is likely experiencing a variety of emotions in regard to the beginning of a new year. An article in the Washington Post surveyed more than 200 readers on the one word they would use to describe the past year. Their answers were as follows: “Relentless. Disappointing. Messy. Clarifying. Growth. Grief. Change. Survival. Fragile. Unexpected. Enlightening. Tumultuous. Transformational. Lonely.”

Japan takes a similar pulse of its nation with the annual determining of the “Kanji of the Year.” The single character selected is supposed to represent how the populace views the closing year, and for 2021 it was deemed to be 金 (kin, or money/gold). The winner beat out 輪 (rin, or circle/wheel) by only 118 votes.

According to the Japan Kanji Aptitude Testing Association that administers the voting, kin was a fitting choice because the Tokyo summer Olympics were the venue for the Japanese Olympic team’s best results ever (including 27 gold medals). The association also noted that kin begins the word 金字塔 (kinjito, or monumental achievement), pointing to the success of MLB’s American League MVP Shohei Ohtani as well as professional shogi player Sota Fujii, who became the youngest four-crown titleholder in the game’s history.

The Japan Information Center in Chicago is hiring three (3) part-time JET Program Interview Assistants for the upcoming JET Program interviews.

One assistant will work from mid-February through mid-March. Please note the working period may change based on the timing of the interviews. The primary responsibility of this position is to assist with JET Interviews (tentatively, February 8 – 12), but other responsibilities pertaining to the JET Program and JIC activities will also be assigned.

The pay is $17 an hour. The work schedule is somewhat flexible; however, during the JET Interview Week, you must work full days. This position will be primarily in-person at the Japan Information Center, however some remote work days may occur, as well. Applicants must live in the Chicagoland area and be able to commute to the Consulate in downtown Chicago.

American Councils for International Education is currently hiring 2022 summer Resident Director for Japanese immersion program of the Critical Language Scholarship Program (CLS Program, see www.clscholarship.org  for more information about the program).

Resident Directors are the first-level of support for CLS students for the duration of the program. The Resident Director supports student success by ensuring the health and safety of the participants, helping them to maintain a Japanese-only language policy, and helping to acclimate them to life in Japan.

The Resident Director position is a non-teaching position but requires a high level of Japanese language. The approximate dates of the program are June to August; Resident Directors also attend a three-day training in May.

Hi everyone! JETwit is planning to launch a podcast, and we need some people who either have experience creating/producing/editing/designing podcasts or don’t have experience but want to learn or figure it out. 

Our goal is to create a platform where multiple JET alums can produce JET-relevant (broadly defined) podcast content and have a way to get it produced, edited, distributed, etc. with editing being probably the most important need at this point. 

Note: To find current JET-relevant podcasts, follow the JETAA Podcast Beat on JETwit curated by Emalee Manes (Toyama-ken, 2016-19) who also has her own delightful podcast, よっぱれい英会話 English Nomikai Podcast

Unfortunately, we can’t pay anything at this point, though we recognize this is a skill that is in demand. It’s conceivable that we get a little funding down the road, but go on the assumption that we won’t and then you’ll be pleasantly surprised if we do.
