WIT Life #360: 今年の漢字

Interpreter/Translator/Writer Stacy Smith (Kumamoto-ken CIR, 2000-03) presents WIT Life, a periodic series about aspects of Japanese culture such as art, film, food and language. Stacy starts her day by watching Fujisankei’s newscast in Japanese, and here she offers some interesting tidbits and trends along with her own observations.

As 2021 draws to a close, everyone is likely experiencing a variety of emotions in regard to the beginning of a new year. An article in the Washington Post surveyed more than 200 readers on the one word they would use to describe the past year. Their answers were as follows: “Relentless. Disappointing. Messy. Clarifying. Growth. Grief. Change. Survival. Fragile. Unexpected. Enlightening. Tumultuous. Transformational. Lonely.”

Japan takes a similar pulse of its nation with the annual determining of the “Kanji of the Year.” The single character selected is supposed to represent how the populace views the closing year, and for 2021 it was deemed to be 金 (kin, or money/gold). The winner beat out 輪 (rin, or circle/wheel) by only 118 votes.

According to the Japan Kanji Aptitude Testing Association that administers the voting, kin was a fitting choice because the Tokyo summer Olympics were the venue for the Japanese Olympic team’s best results ever (including 27 gold medals). The association also noted that kin begins the word 金字塔 (kinjito, or monumental achievement), pointing to the success of MLB’s American League MVP Shohei Ohtani as well as professional shogi player Sota Fujii, who became the youngest four-crown titleholder in the game’s history.

Do you have a podcast or did you recently appear in a podcast? Help us share it with the community by filling out this form.

Welcome to the JETAA Podcast Beat! I hope the beat will be a great way for everyone to stay updated on JET alumni as well as current JET involvement in podcasts. This is my final week hosting the roundup, but I hope everyone will continue to listen to and support JET podcasts!

Krewe of Japan

Japanese TRAINS!

In this episode, Doug and Jenn take a deep dive adventure into the world of Japanese trains! From what to expect when coming to Japan and taking a train, to tips, tricks, and taboos.

USLawEssentials Law & Language

The USLawEssentials Law & Language Podcast, co-hosted by Stephen Horowitz (Aichi-ken, 1992-94) helps non-native English speaking lawyers and law students improve their English and better understand US law and American legal culture. Many of these short episodes are tied to a legal news event or case in the United States. Others include interviews with multilingual lawyers (including a number of JET alumni.) The shows are hosted by attorneys experienced teaching US law and legal English to students and lawyers from around the world.

The Multilingual Lawyer: Quentin Alexandre

The USLawEssentials Law & Language Podcast continues its series of interviews with multilingual lawyers! In this episode, Stephen Horowitz interviews Quentin A. Alexandre, a newly admitted New York attorney from France.

Currently a litigation associate at Kennedy’s, Quentin not only speaks French and English, but also speaks German. He shares excellent insights on learning legal English, succeeding at a US law school, and building a professional career in the United States as a multilingual lawyer. For more insights, be sure to visit his blog at https://www.theinternationallawyer.org/

You can visit Quentin’s attorney profile here: https://kennedyslaw.com/our-people/profiles/new-york/quentin-a-alexandre/

Oh… and perhaps you should grab a pastry while listening to the podcast. Quentin suggests Levain bakery or Épicerie Boulud  Now we certainly do not want to cause any controversy, but if you know any Belgian attorneys who would like to counter Quentin’s suggestion that French baking might just be a bit better than Belgium’s, we will welcome counterarguments (and samples).

Volunteer Opportunity: New JETwit Podcast Seeks Producers/Designers

Posted by Sydney Sparrow. Click here to join the JETwit Jobs Google Group and receive job listings even sooner by email.

Hi everyone! JETwit is planning to launch a podcast, and we need some people who either have experience creating/producing/editing/designing podcasts or don’t have experience but want to learn or figure it out.

Our goal is to create a platform where multiple JET alums can produce JET-relevant (broadly defined) podcast content and have a way to get it produced, edited, distributed, etc. with editing being probably the most important need at this point.

Note: To find current JET-relevant podcasts, follow the JETAA Podcast Beat on JETwit curated by Emalee Manes (Toyama-ken, 2016-19) who also has her own delightful podcast, よっぱれい英会話 English Nomikai Podcast

Unfortunately, we can’t pay anything at this point, though we recognize this is a skill that is in demand. It’s conceivable that we get a little funding down the road, but go on the assumption that we won’t and then you’ll be pleasantly surprised if we do.

Application Process: If you’re interested, just add your name and contact info to this JETwit Podcast Google Form and we’ll be in touch soon.

Questions? Feel free to ask in the Google Form in the comments section at the end. Yoroshiku and gambarimashou!
