The Department of Asian Languages and Literatures at Carleton College invites applications for a full-time visiting assistant professor in Japanese, to begin September 1, 2024. This is a one year appointment.

We seek candidates who can teach Japanese-language courses at all levels, and are passionate about teaching in a liberal arts setting. The position will involve teaching in both the Japanese language sequence as well as teaching courses about Japanese culture in English. Native or near-native fluency in both Japanese and English is required.

The candidate will have a Ph.D. completed or substantially completed in Japanese Studies at the time of application. Field of specialization is open, but the successful candidate will bring expertise that will expand interdisciplinary offerings at the college and attract students from outside Japanese Studies. The successful candidate will also demonstrate a willingness to participate actively in the life of the department and the Asian Studies program, and to contribute to extra-curricular activities. Teaching load is five courses per year. The Carleton calendar includes three 10-week terms.

American Councils for International Education is currently hiring 2024 summer Resident Directors for language immersion programs of the Critical Language Scholarship (CLS) Program. Funded by the U.S. State Department, the CLS Program is an immersive summer opportunity for American college and university students to learn languages essential to America’s engagement with the world.   

Resident Directors (RDs) are the first-level of support for CLS students for the duration of the 8-week program overseas. The RD supports student success by ensuring the health and safety of the participants, helping them to maintain a language policy, and helping to acclimate them to life abroad. 

The RD position is a non-teaching position but requires a high level of proficiency in the target language. The approximate dates of the program are June to August; Resident Directors also attend a three-day training in May. 

We seek individuals who have demonstrated student support experience for undergraduate and/or graduate students, or experience leading or supporting a study abroad or language immersion program. Applications review will begin in January, 2024 and will be reviewed on a rolling basis until all positions are filled.

OVERVIEW OF POSITION
TUJ moved to its brand-new campus with about 1300 undergraduate students in 2019 and grew to a vibrant campus with 1800 students in three years. TUJ seeks a motivated and outgoing admissions counselor for its overseas markets worldwide to support university recruiting and advising prospective students. The Admissions Counselor will assist TUJ in meeting enrollment goals that focus on continuing current growth and achieving a qualified and diverse student population. Description: Work from mid-January through mid-February. Please note the working period may change based on the timing of the interviews. The work schedule is somewhat flexible. However, during the week of JET Interviews, you must work full days.
