Description:
The Digital Museum of the History of Japanese in New York is seeking a creative and expansion-minded Social Media & Marketing Coordinator to support the Digital Museum’s focus on preserving and sharing the experiences of Japanese and Japanese Americans in New York City. This part-time position is ideal for someone passionate about public history, cultural heritage, and engaging diverse audiences through digital storytelling. You will help grow our digital presence, highlight archival materials and oral histories, and connect our mission with both local and global communities.

Key Responsibilities
Content Creation

  • Develop and schedule engaging, historically informed content for social media (Instagram, Facebook, and occasionally YouTube)
  • Spotlight community voices, archival images, historical milestones, and contemporary events relevant to the Japanese American experience in NYC/the tri-state area
  • Produce story-based content to grow the Digital Museum’s digital presence

Marketing & Promotion

  • Design visually compelling graphics and materials using tools like Canva or Adobe Express
  • Promote upcoming exhibitions, events, and educational resources
  • Support digital outreach strategies including email newsletters, press releases, and event calendars

Community Engagement

  • Respond to comments, inquiries, and messages in a warm, respectful, and informed manner
  • Build relationships with cultural organizations, student groups, historians, and community leaders
  • Help spotlight new additions to the Digital Museum and facilitate promotional campaigns

Analytics & Strategy

  • Monitor and report on platform metrics (reach, impressions, engagement)
  • Suggest improvements based on trends and data insights
  • Track success of campaigns and adjust strategies for growth and relevance

Qualifications

  • Experience in social media management or digital marketing
  • Strong writing and visual communication skills
  • Familiarity with tools such as Instagram Insights, and Google Analytics
  • Comfort with Japanese American or Asian American community history—or interest in learning and representing it responsibly
  • Graphic design experience
  • Self-motivated, organized, and comfortable working independently

Preferred (But Not Required)

  • Knowledge of Japanese language
  • Knowledge of Japanese/Japanese American culture, or community issues
  • Experience with oral history, digital archives, or storytelling-based campaigns
  • Ties to Japanese American organizations or networks in the NYC/tri-state area
  • Video editing experience, especially for short-form content
