Overview: Kansai Gaidai University has openings for assistant professors in EFL/ESL, starting April 2016. The university is interested in midcareer professional EFL/ESL faculty who will make a serious commitment to its programs.
Start Date: April 2016
Responsibilities: Teach 15 hours per week per semester, spread across 5 days. Instructors are also expected to hold at least three office hours per week, attend meetings, participate in screening interviews, hold demonstration classes, develop and share instructional materials, participate in peer observation and evaluation, and other duties as assigned.
Education Required: Master’s degree in TESL, TESOL, Applied Linguistics with a TESL emphasis, Linguistics with a TESL emphasis, English with a TESL emphasis, or Education with a TESL emphasis.
Experience Required: Minimum of 5 years teaching English to speakers of other languages, at least 2 of which must be in a country other than the candidate’s nationality. Additional experience preferred.
Language Requirement: High level of English proficiency speakers preferred. Speakers with TOEFL iBT scores of 120 (30 for each section: Reading, Writing, Speaking, and Listening) will be considered.
Term of contract: 5-years, Non-renewable. The mandatory retirement age is 65 in spite of the remaining term.
Initial hiring salary: Commensurate with qualifications and experience.
Benefits: Benefits provided include furnished, on-campus housing; reimbursement for airfare from the country of residence to Japan for the teacher (not for accompanying family members) upon arrival at Kansai Gaidai; return flight for the teacher on completion of 5 full years; and payment of half of the health insurance premiums.
Conditions: If student evaluations or TOEFL score improvement are below expectation, instructor may be reassigned to the regular EFL program with the incumbent responsibilities. Successful candidates should expect to arrive in Osaka the last week of March 2016 for orientation.
