DIRECTOR OF STUDY ABROAD

Michigan State University, recognized internationally as one of the world’s major research universities and a leader in global engagement, invites nominations and applications for the position of Director of Study Abroad. MSU is widely regarded as conducting one of the largest and most distinguished study abroad programs in the nation, and seeks a leader of exceptional strategic, intellectual, and managerial abilities to lead study abroad to even higher levels of excellence and centrality in the University’s educational mission.

Study Abroad at MSU: The Office of Study Abroad (OSA) currently serves close to 3,000 students annually in more than 275 programs in over 60 nations on all continents as well as 300 non-matriculating inbound students from 30 countries. Programs are offered through a matrix organizational structure in collaboration with MSU’s colleges, departments, faculty, and numerous international partners. The Director reports directly to the University’s Dean of International Studies and Programs (ISP) and supervises a talented staff of over twenty. OSA is admired internationally for its faculty-led programs, innovative Freshman Seminar Abroad Programs, the American Semester Program, and leadership regarding international health and safety policies and practices.

The Commitment of the University’s Leadership: The University’s leadership strongly supports furthering MSU’s national preeminence in study abroad, making available to all MSU students superb international experiences that will contribute to their effectiveness as future leaders in all sectors of the global community. To that end, the University recently became a commitment partner of IIE’s Generation Study Abroad initiative. The Director will pursue these strategic goals, while also enjoying the opportunity to bring his or her own vision in shaping the future of study abroad at the institution. A leader in virtually every dimension of international affairs and global engagement, MSU seeks to build upon the achievements which led to its receiving the 2006 Senator Paul Simon Award from NAFSA for campus internationalization.

Key Responsibilities: The Director provides vision, leadership, innovation, and advocacy in developing strategies for strengthening study abroad and integrating student international experience as fully as possible into the University’s academic and intellectual fabric, for both outbound MSU students and visiting international students on the American Semester Program; collaborates campus-wide with academic and managerial leaders, and with international partners and stakeholders to advance study abroad experiences; administers a complex study abroad organization, providing both strategic and administrative leadership, staff development opportunities, and sound financial stewardship; fosters student international internship, community engagement and service learning, and research opportunities; and represents with considerable independence the University and its study abroad programs throughout the campus and with professional organizations and associations throughout the world. Specifically, the Director works closely with the University’s area studies and thematic centers, the Office for International Students and Scholars, and study abroad liaisons designated by the college deans. In addition, the Director will continue to support MSU’s national and international leadership and visibility in the education abroad field.

Personal and Professional Qualities Sought: The Director is a key member of a diverse ISP leadership team who are strongly committed to collegial decision-making and management, and as such will need to exemplify the integrity, leadership, accountability, and concern for the collective good expected of all of the University’s senior international personnel. In addition, the University seeks an individual who offers ten or more years of progressively responsible experience developing and managing university study abroad and/or international exchange programs, thereby acquiring an in-depth understanding of the scholarship and practice of study abroad; a person who understands the nature of planning and management in a complex, decentralized research university, and whose career demonstrates consensus-building, problem-solving, entrepreneurial, and program-building skills, as well as effective personnel management; someone who is committed to enriching the quality and diversity of study abroad experiences, and to increasing student participation, particularly among underrepresented groups; and a person capable of intellectual leadership, and of inspiring and supporting a passion for excellence, who can help catalyze a shared education vision and partner effectively with faculty and deans. Position Title: Assistant Director for Student Services, International Services Office, University of Rochester

 

Hours per week: 40 / full-time

 

Description: Under general direction of the Associate Director for Student Services of the International Services Office (ISO), provides advising and program management for over 3000 F-1 and J-1 international students and their dependents.  Working closely with the ISO Student Services team, offers advanced expertise on complex immigration, academic, cultural, and personal issues.  Supervises a team of 3 administrative professionals to manage front office operations and common processing workflows.  Specific responsibilities include coordination and supervision of immigration processing for incoming international students to programs throughout the University’s academic divisions.  Contributes to orientation events, workshop presentations, ISO representation for University and external initiatives, and other programming efforts.  Assists Associate Director in development of relevant policy and practice, campus communications, and training programs.  Serves on various committees and otherwise represents ISO, both within the University and externally to off-campus representatives.

 

Qualifications: Bachelor’s degree required; Master’s strongly preferred.  Minimum 5-7 years of experience working with international students in a higher education environment.  Extensive knowledge of current F-1 and J-1 regulations and SEVIS; familiarity with fsaAtlas preferred.  Excellent communication, interpersonal, and organizational skills are required.  Ability to work both independently and as a constructive, collaborative member of team efforts.  Must possess well-developed research, writing, presentation, and analytical skills.  Proficiency with Microsoft Office applications is needed, and experience or comfort in learning new applications to handle web publishing.  Experience with cross-cultural exchange and/or studying or working overseas is strongly preferred.  Occasional evening and weekend hours will be required.  Must be a U.S. citizen or Permanent Resident, per federal regulations.

 

Responsibilities:

40%        Management of Admissions Processing

·         Manage data collection, processing, and coordination for newly admitted international students.

·         Determine appropriate immigration processing and counseling for new students to various UR programs.

·         Oversee related responsibilities and delegate duties to two ISO staff assigned to admissions processing.

·         Develop policy for new academic programs seeking ISO visa sponsorship for international participants.

·         Supervise immigration check-in and welcome for arriving international students, spouses, and children.

·         Create forms, communications, and training materials to facilitate immigration processing needs.

30%        Supervision of Office Operations

·         Supervise three full-time Immigration Assistant administrative staff, and temporary staff as needed.

·         Manage and implement various support services in response to international population needs, including English conversation practice, resources for dependent spouses, and tax reporting assistance.

·         Oversee systems for data collection and internal communications to facilitate necessary workflows.

·         Maintain records of office traffic, service trends, and queries to make recommendations on ISO practices.

·         Coordinate resources to ensure adequate training and support for all staff who handle daily operations.

30%        Immigration Advising and Counseling

·         Serve as Designated School Official (DSO) for the F-1 visa program and Alternate Responsible Officer (ARO) for the J-1 visa program, as authorized by U.S. Department of Homeland Security and U.S. Department of State, respectively.

·         Advise students on complex immigration requirements, options, benefits, and permissions.

·         Counsel students or make appropriate referrals to available support resources for various personal, social, academic, cultural, financial, taxation, and other issues.

·         Collaborate with UR administrators to interpret regulations within context of University academic policies.

·         Assist with SEVIS compliance, reporting, and database maintenance for sponsored international students.

·         Analyze relevant information and issue immigration documentation on behalf of the University.

·         Develop and deliver educational programming, such as immigration workshops, orientation sessions, etc.

Position Summary
The Program Advisor position is responsible for promoting and closing the sale of our outbound programs by working with students, student organizations, universities, and faculty. In this role, the successful candidate will support students through the program application process with the goal of increasing enrollment numbers. This position requires a highly energetic and personable individual who can consistently reach out to the prospective customers and build relationships.

In addition to servicing direct enrollment participants from sales & marketing lead gen efforts, the Program Advisor will work with the Regional Internship Team in establishing and maintaining relationships with universities for the purpose of participant recruitment in the assigned affiliated universities.

The Program Advisor is required to have a thorough understanding and be the Power User of our CRM platform, Salesforce.com, as well a comprehensive understanding of program delivery abroad and may participate in site delivery during high season.

Also needs to acquire extensive knowledge on permutations of program logistics by country, visa requirements, educational credit requirements, and be able to counsel students and universities accordingly.

The position will adhere to goals. Priorities:
1. Promoting, closing sales and ongoing support for all Outbound Programs;
