Reporting to the Executive Director of the Weatherhead East Asian Institute, the incumbent will be responsible for managing events programming and related initiatives through event planning and execution, program development, and budget management. The Institute is a center of graduate-level education, research, and outreach on China, Japan, Korea, Tibet, and the countries of Southeast and Inner Asia at Columbia.
Duties include planning, coordinating and implementing, through consultation with faculty and senior staff, all aspects of Weatherhead events, including speakers’ programs, conferences, symposia, and other public events. This involves corresponding with participants and attendees domestically and overseas regarding conference plans, making site and all other logistical arrangements, negotiating with vendors and managing program budgets, compilation of related program materials, handling advertising and publicity, and hiring and supervising part-time workers as needed. Duties also include assisting the Faculty Director and Executive Director in certain new Institute initiatives, as well as participating in overall development of Institute communications and public relations strategies to strengthen the Institute’s image, including websites, publications, and student/alumni relations networks, and the hiring and supervision of graphic designers,consultants and other temporary staff needed to carry out the above initiatives. Other duties as assigned.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
Bachelor’s degree or equivalent and a minimum of two years of related experience. Excellent interpersonal, oral and written communications, budgeting and organizational skills essential. Must have thorough familiarity with Microsoft Office. Some supervisory experience required.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
Master’s degree or its equivalent highly preferred. Experience living in or working in East Asia and/or higher education administration experience highly preferable; some proficiency in an East Asian language helpful.
