Overview:

Sasakawa Peace Foundation USA is a 501c3 non-profit located in Washington, DC involved in U.S.-Japan relations, providing conferences and seminars, think tank analysis, people-to-people exchanges and coordination of high-level dialogue between the two countries through our in-house and collaborative programs.

Sasakawa USA seeks an experienced Associate Fellow to provide substantive, programmatic and administrative support for its Security and Foreign Policy Program. This program includes work on an ongoing project on the future of the U.S.-Japan alliance and other new, unique and important projects covering key bilateral and regional issues in U.S.-Japan security and diplomatic relations. The Associate Fellow will conduct research on U.S.-Japan security and foreign policy issues for publication by Sasakawa USA, and will help develop a plan for a set of Sasakawa USA programs on these issues. The Associate Fellow will help plan and conduct workshops, conferences and other activities, and will help publicize the results.

The Associate Fellow is a member of the quickly growing Programs team led by the Chairman & CEO and Director for Programs.

Requirements:

  • Master’s degree in security, foreign policy or other relevant field or 4-6 years of equivalent experience in the security and international relations field with a focus on Japan and/or Asia
  • Demonstrated expertise in U.S.-Japan security and diplomatic matters
  • Familiarity with key security, foreign policy and other policymakers in the United States and Japan
  • Previous research and analytical work on security and foreign policy issues or equivalent engagement in policymaking
  • Strong written and oral communications skills
  • Strong organizational skills
  • Attention to detail and ability to multi-task
  • Excellent interpersonal skills
  • Demonstrated ability to work in a team
  • Authorization to work in the US (without employer sponsorship)

Preferred Skills

  • Proficiency in written and oral Japanese, JLPT N2 or equivalent preferred
  • Doctorate or equivalent
  • Publications in the security field and U.S.-Japan relations
  • Experience in preparing project proposals and budget plans
  • Experience in organizing events and delegation visits to a foreign country and within the United States
  • Experience working in a think tank, academia, foundations, or other organization with research and programming focus

Responsibilities:

  • Develop an overall multi-year plan for the Sasakawa USA Security and Foreign Policy Program.
  • Monitor and report on key developments in U.S.-Japan security and diplomatic relations
  • Research issues in the U.S.-Japan security relationship that are receiving inadequate coverage elsewhere, and publish results in Sasakawa USA’s media or in other fora
  • Draft Security and Foreign Policy Program’s project proposals and other documents including policy briefs, op-eds, conference and project reports, and website content
  • Formulate project budgets and track expenditures of funds in coordination with the Administrative Office
  • Evaluate, manage and follow-up on incoming proposals and documents from external organizations
  • Develop, plan and implement conferences, roundtables and other events in and outside of Washington, D.C. and assist in outreach activities related to the Security and Foreign Policy Program
  • · Communicate and coordinate regularly with other staff as well as partner and support individuals and organizations in executing projects and events
  • · Provide information and website material to the Senior Program Officer and Communications team on projects and related issues as part of Sasakawa USA’s overall media and outreach efforts
  • Provide administrative and programmatic direction to Program Assistants and interns in the research program
  • Develop and maintain a strong network of key experts and policymakers in U.S.-Japan security and diplomatic relations
  • Travel as requested to attend project-related conferences and events
