Overview:

The Manager of Graphic Design and Production is responsible for designing and producing all printed materials for Japan Society departments and consulting on all other projects involving the Society’s visual presence (including online) to reinforce and preserve the integrity of the graphic identity of the institution.

Responsibilities include: 

  • Maintain a consistent and appealing graphic identity for the Society, including consulting on all relevant out-of-house projects.
  • Work with the Publications Manager, in consultation with all staff, to manage and evaluate the publications needs of all departments.
  • Design and manage production of all printed materials.
  • Design various online and interactive marketing materials, and consult on website design.
  • Obtain quotes from vendors on all printed projects and research new vendors.
  • Schedule and supervise the silkscreening of Gallery exhibition graphics and research and execute the fabrication of related signage, as well as general building signage.
  • Attend press checks and handle all proofing of projects with vendors until their completion and delivery.
  • Assign projects to freelance designers when needed.
  • Assist the Publications Manager with departmental budget when related to printing and typesetting.
  • Assist the Publications Manager in overseeing the maintenance of electronic archive and MAC computers within the department. 

Qualifications: 

  • Bachelor’s degree in studio art or graphic design, and at least 5 years experience in print design and production
  • Expert knowledge of MAC OS, Adobe Creative Suite (InDesign, Illustrator, Photoshop, Acrobat)
  • Experience retouching images, color correction, and overseeing press checks
  • Excellent verbal and written communications skills
  • Strong problem-solving and interpersonal skills
  • Proficiency in Japanese desirable but not required
