Overview:
Over the past year, a team of researchers and collaborators led by Drs. Larry Aber and Hiro Yoshikawa have been working to develop a new global center at New York University, IDEAS for Kids: Intervention Development, Evaluation, and Applications at Scale. This center aims to improve the design, implementation, and evaluation of programs to promote children’s holistic development in low-income countries, low-income populations in middle-income countries, and conflict-affected countries around the world. To achieve this mission, we are currently working with a set of strategic partner organizations to develop a set of core programmatic activities to: (1) develop advanced methods to support research and evaluation; (2) bring a settings-level perspective to intervention design and evaluation of settings-level interventions; (3) enhance the ability to take evidence-based interventions to scale, and to improve the implementation and quality of at-scale programs and policies; and (4) build engagement across stakeholders, sectors, and regions.
We are seeking a qualified applicant to report to the Center co-directors (Larry Aber and Hiro Yoshikawa) and collaborate with the Assistant Director for Program to launch and ensure the success of this new multi-country effort. This includes: (1) working with center staff to develop and implement a multi-faceted internal (NYU) and external communications strategy; (2) establishing and maintaining systems (e.g., databases, online storage) to facilitate center organization and communication; and (3) providing operational and logistical support to center staff in arranging travel, planning meetings, and maintaining budgets.
Responsibilities:
- 60% Communications Activities, including: working with senior Center staff to design, organize, and staff internal and external stakeholder convenings in the U.S. and abroad; providing writing and editorial assistance in the development of academic-, funder-, and policy-oriented outputs and publications; and spearheading the design and implementation of a web-based platform for sharing Center updates and resources.
- 20% Organizational Systems Activities, including: establishing and maintaining databases to facilitate all communications activities described above; working with IT staff to implement within-NYU and between-partner organization secure file sharing systems; and establishing systems to track and disseminate RFPs and job openings from external organizations.
- 20% Logistical Activities, including: arranging and managing complicated travel, meeting scheduling and coordinating, maintaining budgets, ordering supplies, faxing, and photocopying.
Assistant Director Qualifications:
- Bachelor’s degree and 3+ years of professional work experience required. Excellent written communication skills are essential, and previous experience developing and implementing events is highly desired.
- Master’s degree, preferably in psychology, education, public policy, English or related field strongly preferred;
- Proven knowledge of international development policy and/or international education;
- Strong writing skills, specifically with grants, academic publications, and/or program proposals;
- Experience working with governmental, non-governmental, and philanthropic organizations, including in international contexts;
- Outstanding cross-cultural competencies and demonstrated ability to cultivate and maintain collegial relationships with domestic and international colleagues at all levels;
- Experience organizing and supporting high-level conferences, workshops, and seminars;
- Self-motivated to work independently; flexibile to work cooperatively as part of a team;
- Experience working with graduate students;
- Excellent computer skills, including expertise using web 2.0 technologies to sustain communities of practice, MS Access Office, Adobe, databases and websites.
- Outstanding attention to detail;
- Resourcefulness and initiative in dealing with broad-ranging requests;
- Ability to work on multiple projects simultaneously, and to prioritize and meet deadlines;
- Flexible and adaptable to changing needs and priorities; and
- Discretion and strict confidentiality dealing with sensitive information.
