Overview:

This position exists in order to enable students to study abroad as an integral part of their University of Colorado at Boulder academic career by managing CU-Boulder academic programs overseas, by advising students about study abroad, by serving as a regional advising specialist, and by selecting and preparing students for the experience. The position provides backup to other program managers during their peak busy times by reviewing student applications and following up with difficult cases. The position works with the director of Study Abroad Programs on projects and initiatives as needed. The position liaises with academic units to help further their Global Initiatives and serves on the SA Curriculum Integration team. The position serves on the faculty-led Global Seminar team, and manages Global Seminars. The position manages the pre-departure/orientation process and oversees all student evaluations. The position is expected to further the strategic goals and mission of the University of Colorado at Boulder and to contribute to the University’s and the Office’s Diversity Plans.

What your key responsibilities will be:
Study Abroad Program Management: 25%
Manage portfolio of assigned study abroad programs by working both with program personnel and students. Program assignments will be primarily in Europe, but could include programs in the Middle East and North Africa. Responsibility involves coordinating with overseas or U.S. partner institution colleagues on academic, logistic, and cultural issues; counseling, selecting, and orienting the student participants; maintaining contact with the students and their parents while they are overseas; and processing the students’ credit and assisting them with their reentry to U.S. society when they return. Make recommendations to the director regarding improvements to programs and addition of new programs if needed. If possible, meet with staff from program providers and overseas institutions to develop good working relationships. Maintain program information on web site. Liaise with various departments on campus to help students coordinate the academic side of their study abroad experience as it relates to course approvals, and to effectively communicate course evaluations to students. Serve as a resource to academic advisors about study abroad programs. Position also serves as backup to other program managers to take on some of their responsibilities during peak times, or while they are out of the office. Periodically participate in overseas site visits and program reviews, and attend regional and national conferences on international education.

Faculty-Led Global Seminar Management: 15%
Manage assigned portfolio of faculty-led Global Seminars. Work closely with the SA director of Global Seminars and with faculty directors of the programs to coordinate program logistics, advertising, recruitment of students, application review and selection of students. Establish and maintain good working relationship with overseas providers and institutions and with the appropriate academic unit on campus. Work with overseas partners and faculty director on itinerary, housing, field trips, and other program elements. Alert director of Global Seminars to potential problems with these programs. Work with the Global Seminar director on training directors and participating in workshops for faculty. Set program budget, on team with the faculty director, director of Global Seminars, and the OIE assistant director of budget and finance.

Lead for Study Abroad Orientations: 12%
Serve as lead for study abroad pre-departure orientations and oversee organization of program specific orientations. Schedule, coordinate, and develop content for the general orientations in the spring and fall and invite guest speakers. Manage the logistics and set-up of the event. Identify and invite dynamic guest speakers. Review student evaluations and best practices in the field of education abroad, bringing suggestions for improvements to the program manager team and the SAP director. Create reports from student evaluations and share with program management team. Work with the coordinator of the Essential Guide and the Pocket Guide to Study Abroad to ensure that these materials are updated and available for students when the orientations are held.

Study Abroad Advising: 25%
Serve on the Europe, North Africa, and Middle East regional advising team. Advise undergraduate students about opportunities for study abroad by meeting individually with students to determine their interests, qualifications, and needs, and by directing students to appropriate programs after assessing their academic and linguistic qualifications and personal goals. Advise students who have chosen a study abroad program about academic and cultural aspects of the country where they will study and about methods for getting academic advising, leaving and returning to UCB, and for non-UCB programs, transfer credit policies. Attend weekly advisor’s meetings, and participate in case study discussions. Position will have three half-day advising shifts during peak periods, and two – three to four half-day advising shifts during the remainder of the year.
Stay updated on program changes and policies and follow all relevant procedures. For regional advising, take ownership of knowledge for respective regions and participate in all regional training and updates. For programs that this position manages, provide training and updates as needed to the regional advising teams. When requested and when possible, provide back-up advising during extremely busy times outside of scheduled hours, or when other staff cannot take their advising shifts. Be familiar with the content of Study Abroad 101 presentations, and provide feedback to the SA 101 coordinator as needed. Provide feedback to the lead advisor regarding suggestions for improvement or changes to the SAP advising model; share feedback from students regarding advising as appropriate.

Curriculum Integration: 5%
Serve on the Curriculum Integration Team to work with assigned academic departments to better integrate study abroad courses into their curriculum. Meet with the departmental chairs or the designated representative for internationalizing their curriculum. In conjunction with the appropriate academic departments and the Curriculum Integration team, create major-specific study abroad guides for key students and advisors and hold interest meetings for majors.
Conduct research on departments around campus, provide statistical analysis of student participation in study abroad programs by department/major. Conduct research on study abroad programs and compile information such as course lists. Other duties as assigned by the manager of the curriculum integration project.

Visa Certification Support: 3%
Assist the visa coordinator and the program manager for Italy in certifying visa application documents and assisting students through the visa application process.

Other Projects, Duties, and Responsibilities as assigned: 15%
Person in this position will be asked to work on special projects which could be short or long term in nature. Examples include grant proposals, writing articles for newsletters, research, marketing and outreach projects, assisting international students going abroad, supporting the work of the visa coordinator, data collection and analysis, and post-experience programming for returned students.

Annual salary range of $40,000. to $47,000., commensurate with experience and skills.
