Overview:
Founded in 1829, Rochester Institute of Technology is a privately endowed, coeducational university with nine colleges emphasizing career education and experiential learning. The campus occupies 1,300 acres in suburban Rochester, the third-largest city in New York state. RIT also has international campuses in Eastern Europe and Dubai. The RIT student body consists of approximately 15,000 undergraduate and 2,900 graduate students. Enrolled students represent all 50 states and more than 100 countries.
ISS: The staff at International Student Services provides a solid foundation for RIT’s commitment to international education, assisting over 2,600 individuals from more than 100 countries. We advise students, faculty, clubs and departments on immigration, cultural, academic and personal matters. We work closely with Global Union, and several other international student clubs. Off-campus programs are often run with our colleagues at the RIT English Language Center as well as with Rochester Global Connections.
Position Description: Advise international students on immigration, cross-cultural and personal adjustment matters. Interpret immigration regulations for students and staff pertaining to F-1 and J-1 students and scholars. Serve as Designated School Official (DSO) authorized by the Department of Homeland Security, and as Alternate Responsible Officer (ARO) authorized by the Department of State. Assist in maintenance of SEVIS database. Assist with International Student Orientation (including hiring and supervising student orientation assistants).
Join an innovative and creative team in facilitating the successful transition of international students to the campus community. Advise the Global Union student organization, develop educational and social programs and assist key committees. For more information, see www.rit.edu/studentaffairs/iss
Requirements: Experience working as a DSO or ARO with student or scholar visa regulations. Master’s degree preferred, in International Studies, Intercultural Communication, Counseling, Education, Student Personnel Administration, or related field. Minimum of three years of experience working in higher education. Strong problem solving, crisis management, and cross-cultural communication skills is essential. American Sign Language or a commitment to develop ASL skills is required (free campus courses available). Must be able to work effectively as part of a team, managing multiple priorities. Overseas living or working experience highly desirable. Must be willing to develop and maintain professional competence by active involvement with international associations. Ability to contribute to RIT’s commitment to cultural diversity and pluralism.
