Overview:

The Coordinator for Faculty-Led Study Abroad will effectively lead and administer all parts of East Carolina University’s faculty-led study abroad programs including marketing, recruiting, advising students, and managing applications for programs. During each summer there are usually thirty ECU faculty-led study abroad/travel courses available for students. Summer study abroad programs are offered in cooperation with ECU’s colleges, departments and faculty, student support services, and international sites where learning opportunities take place. This position requires knowledge of study abroad programming and general understanding of the interrelationships and the need for coordinated action within study abroad program development. This position also requires considerable administrative planning to develop creative solutions which integrate approaches across organizational lines.

Duties and responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

  • Consult with faculty, students and prospective students to tailor summer  study abroad information to meet their goals. 
  • Consult with faculty in organizing courses (Italy Intensives); oversee faculty preparing budgets, itineraries, and minimizing health and safety risks to program participants. 
  • Serve as the main campus liaison for the Italy Intensives Program including student recruitment, visa coordination with the Italian Consulate, and collaborate with faculty and administrators. 
  • As an extension of the marketing role, represent the Summer Study Abroad Office at General Information Sessions, the Study Abroad Fair, Visitation Days, New Student Programs, Parent Programs, and other meetings. 
  • Plan, organize and conduct general information sessions, focus meetings, orientation, pre-departure, and reentry programs; coordinate marketing  and outreach activities. 
  • Cooperate and collaborate with the ECU Office of International Affairs in providing quality experiences abroad for all program participants. 
  • Develop marketing plans and branding initiatives to promote programs and recruit participants including display advertisements, fliers, brochures, catalog copy, website postings, social media, national resources for study abroad, and study abroad fairs on and off campus. Develop and analyze information resources and training programs that will  instruct participants and their families on health and safety issues in their destination country/countries so they can make informed decisions concerning preparation, participation, and behavior while on the program. 
  • Review and evaluate the financial management of all summer study abroad programs and collaborate with the Business and Finance offices in strategic 
  • planning; oversee program budget. 
  • Negotiate with international sites to determine the services to be provided and the related costs for instruction, accommodations and excursions that enhance the educational experience. 
  • Manage administrative and risk management issues; communicate policies, procedures, and deadlines. 
  • Lead the administrators and faculty on goals related to academic  programming; serve on committees. 
  • Develop and maintain excellent communication and working relationships with administrative units on campus including Student Life, Registrar’s  Office, Financial Aid, and Business Office. 
  • Evaluate effectiveness of all programs. Analyze and assess success and use results to revise and enhance program planning. 
Minimum Qualifications: 
  • Master’s degree in a relevant field of study. 
  • Minimum 5 years of work experience in a higher education setting. 
  • Excellent organizational skills, the ability to handle multiple tasks and balance priorities.
  • Demonstrated commitment to and interest in international education.
  • Experience in working with diverse students, faculty and/or study abroad programs.
  • Excellent communication skills. 
  • Experience managing complex programs and resources.
  • Strong analytical skills and the ability to work well under pressure are required.
  • Available to work some evenings and weekends.
  • Able to travel domestically and internationally. Must be able to competently interact with a culturally and ethnically diverse population of students, faculty and staff. 
Preferred Qualifications: Substantive international experience, including study and/or living and working abroad. Knowledge of issues related to international study including comparative systems of international education, international credit transfer, pre-departure orientation, reentry programming, financial aid, risk management, emergency protocols, and cultural factors influencing student attitudes and behaviors. Knowledge of second languages.
