Overview:
Location: London £19 – 23k depending on experience
The Japan Society is the leading independent body in the United Kingdom dedicated to the enhancement of the British-Japanese relationship in all its facets. It is a membership organisation and educational charity whose core programmes include approximately 80 academic, business and cultural events each year, support for schools teaching about Japan, provision of small grants, publication of periodicals and books, and maintenance of a small historic library.
The Japan Society is now recruiting for the role of Communications and Events Officer, a full-time position integral to the daily running of the organisation.
He / She will be responsible for the Japan Society’s marketing materials, both print and digital, and co-ordinating the organisation’s diverse events programme. The successful applicant will have a range of skills but emphasis will be placed on creative marketing ability and IT fluency.
The role reports directly to the Chief Executive but impacts every aspect of the Society’s work. As such, the chosen candidate will be expected to work effectively with all members of our small team.
Main Duties and Responsibilities:
- Maintain the Japan Society website and managing social media
- The successful applicant will be responsible for the day-today running of the Society’s website. This entails using a WordPress management system to regularly format news, events and other content. In addition, the role involves updating the Society’s Facebook and Twitter pages; expanding its audience and maintaining a consistent online presence.
- Events Management
- Assist the Chief Executive planning and organising Japan Society events. This includes conceiving original activities for the programme and may require evening work.
- Events Marketing
- Manage the Society’s mass email marketing software, sending regular updates to members and email subscribers. The Communication and Events Officer will be expected to produce additional marketing materials as and when required.
- Co-ordinating all Japan Society publications
- This role includes the design, layout and production of three principal publications:
- The Upcoming Events Programme (monthly), the Japan Society Review (bi-monthly) and the Japan Society Proceedings (annual). Managing the publication schedule is a key aspect of this role.
- *The Communications and Events Officer is responsible for maintaining consistency across all elements of the Society’s branding.
Requirements:
- Excellent English language skills (ability to handle telephone calls, write varied content, participate in meetings).
- Working knowledge of Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, Powerpoint etc) is essential. Proven experience using Adobe Creative Suite (specifically InDesign & Photoshop) is highly advantageous as is knowledge of WordPress.

- Flexibility and a willingness to get involved, when necessary, in any aspect of the Society’s activity as part of a small team.
- Knowledge of Japanese language and culture is useful.
- Candidates must be eligible to work in the UK.
