Overview:

Advising students and facilitating the monitoring of institutional compliance with federal regulations of the Department of Homeland Security and the Department of State. Creation of immigration documents for F, J, and other visa statuses. Advising, counseling and educating students on topics related to their sojourn in the United States, including immigration, employment, travel, personal, financial and social concerns. This adviser plans and coordinates orientation programs for students; cross-cultural training across campus; electronic communications, including both an electronic newsletter and website. Serves as Designated School Official for U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services and Alternate Responsible Office for U.S. Department of State.

Job Duties:

  • This advisor will contribute to institutional compliance with SEVIS as part of a SEVISteam, including Batch processing. S/he will:
  • Maintain relevant records and statistics of F-1 and J-1 students and scholars
  • Coordinate daily data input, monitor records, and report as required, utilizing existing and specialized software for SEVIS compliance;
  • Advise and counsel on issues relevant to SEVIS compliance;
  • Conduct educational, training and orientation programs for international students
  • Maintain information coordination requirements of the office with emphasis on electronic web-based communications

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree or equivalent combination of education or experience in a related field such as International Relations, Cross-Cultural Counseling, Higher Education, Humanities, Social Work, Information Technology. Strong computer skills are required.
  • At least one year’s experience working in an office which has an international educational exchange focus.
  • Experience working with U.S. immigration regulations essential.
  • Second language fluency, living abroad experience, excellent written and oral skills in the English language preferred.
  • Computer applications, such as Word, Excel, Access and HTML required.
  • Cross-cultural counseling educational background beneficial.

Job Specific Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree in relevant area. Master’s degree preferred.
  • Knowledge of F and J immigration regulations required.
  • Excellent analytical skills to interpret regulations and solve problems.
  • Must hold U.S. citizenship or lawful permanent resident status to meet federal regulatory requirements for potential professional practice as a Designated School Official (for the Department of Homeland Security) and Alternate Responsible Officer (for the Department of State) as required by the J Exchange Visitor visa program.
  • The most qualified candidates will have experience in cross-cultural communication and at least one year of work experience in an office which has an international educational exchange focus. Experience with orientation programs at a college or university level helpful.
  • Excellent written and oral skills in the English language.
  • Significant technology expertise is required, including MS-Word, Excel, Access, Outlook, and other web-based applications.
  • Solid skills in data base applications and experience with data based applications and management is preferred. Experience with PeopleSoft and Oracle sytems helpful.
  • Fluency in a foreign language and/or experience living abroad is also strongly preferred.
  • Membership and active participation in NAFSA: Association of International Educators is preferred.
