Overview:

Reporting to the Senior Vice Provost for Academic Administration, the Associate Provost and Director provides leadership for the office responsible for assisting the University’s international students and scholars with their immigration needs and for ensuring that the University meets the immigration regulatory requirements of the federal government. 

Responsibilities include: 

  • Directs the provision of visa and other immigration services to the University’s 11,000 international students, faculty, other officers, and visiting scholars
  • Designs and implements plans to meet the changing regulatory rules on visas and immigration of the Department of Homeland Security and other government agencies
  • Provides leadership for the University’s relationship with the government on immigration compliance
  • Advises schools and departments on visa and other immigration questions
  • Works with other University departments to provide social, cultural, and information programming to help the University’s international population acculturate to living in New York and studying or working at Columbia
  • Manages the staff of the International Students and Scholars Office and is responsible for its budget

Minimum Qualifications include:

  •  Bachelor’s degree required.
  • Minimum 8-10 years’ related experience required
  • Strong technical knowledge of the laws and regulations governing visas and other immigration matters
  • Substantial experience in progressively more responsible positions in delivering immigration services to international students and scholars and in meeting the immigration compliance requirements of the government
  • Active involvement in professional associations of officers responsible for immigration services in higher education, preferably in leadership roles
  • Knowledge of computing systems devoted to immigration services; experience in supervising their design and implementation preferred
  • Excellent organizational skills
  • Ability to communicate well, orally and in writing
  • Experience in supervising staff
  • Ability to handle sensitive information with discretion and tact

Preferred Qualifications:

– A post-baccalaureate degree
– Experience working in research universities
