Position: Study Abroad Advisor/Coordinator

Overview:

This position includes responsibilities that are critically important to the educational mission and daily operations of education abroad at an academically rigorous liberal arts college that emphasized global education. The position includes selective administrative duties and most student advising for a wide variety of programs: Dickinson’s own long-standing semester and academic year programs, partner programs, non-Dickinson programs, summer programs, and selected short-term programs. In addition to the specific duties and functions outlined below, the Study Abroad Coordinator/Advisor plays a lead role in outreach, individual and group advising, pre-departure orientation, re-entry programming, and training/supervising peer advisors. The position also serves a key role in fielding a variety of questions regarding study abroad from many constituents (students, faculty, administrators and parents).

Education and Experience Required:

  • Bachelor’s degree required; Master’s degree highly preferred.
  • Minimum 3 years of relevant work experience, including study abroad advising and preferably in the context of a selective liberal arts college.
  • Successful academic and cross-cultural experience as a study abroad participant.
  • High level of energy and enthusiasm to handle multiple tasks in a fast-paced environment.
  • Command of English and at least one additional language.
  • Demonstrated intellectual curiosity and interest in student learning.
  • Familiarity with or strong willingness to learn software such as Studio Abroad, Microsoft Office, Moodle, Go To Meeting, Skype, and a web CMS.
  • Legally permitted to work in the United States.

Job Duties:

  • Work with on-campus faculty program coordinators to recruit and orient students.
  • Advise students on study abroad options (and a few US-based programs) that fit their academic trajectory and learning goals. This includes information sessions and advising on credit transfer, applications, and course selections.
  • Organize and implement returnee events including forums for students to present their learning and independent study projects.
  • Review and update as needed study abroad procedures, documents and website information.
  • Serve as a liaison for advising with Residence Life, Student Development, Admissions, and Athletics, including questions of student suitability for off-campus study.
  • Manage all documents related to advising.
  • Maintain good relationships for student advising with partner programs and study abroad providers as well as with institutions that send students on Dickinson programs.
  • Manage student evaluations of study abroad programs and provide summary reports.
  • Respond to student, faculty and parent requests for basic information about programs and advising.
  • Assist in the review of student applications for off-campus study.
  • Assist with cost sheets and budgets.
  • Participate in selected committees as needed.
  • Assist the Director of Education Abroad with other projects as assigned.
  • This position is expected to supervise student peer advisors and returned student “Global Ambassadors”. Depending on qualifications, the Study Abroad Coordinator/Advisor may also supervise a Program Associate and/or Program/Applications Coordinator.
