Overview:
The Executive Director, serving at the will of the Board of Directors, is chief executive officer of the Society with responsibility for day-to-day management and operations of the organization. This includes working with the Board on strategic plans, formulating the annual business plan and budget, gaining approval for said plan by the Executive Committee and the Board, active fundraising, and managing the staff and other resources of the Society to achieve the business plan. The Executive Director is an ex officio member of the Board.

The Executive Director’s primary responsibilities are as follows:
1) Work effectively with Board Chair, Board members, and others as necessary to develop and implement strategic plans for the Society. Mobilize Board members, other Society members, and volunteers as needed in task forces or other groups or individually to achieve specific strategic and tactical objectives. Develop annual business plans consistent with the Society’s strategy and its mission.

2) Formulate, direct, and actively participate in successful marketing and fund raising efforts with a staff development officer and the Board. This includes responsibility for and active participation in efforts to maximize revenue from all sources, including membership renewal, new member development, annual fund raising, the annual gala and silent auction, sponsored programs, Japanese language lessons, foundation and other grant development, and other possible sources of revenue consistent with the Society’s mission.

3) Assure that the Society provides high quality programming which serves the Society’s mission and maintains its value proposition while attracting a growing and financially supportive membership base.

4) Manage the Society’s staff and operating expenses effectively. Assure clear position descriptions and major annual work plans exist for each staff member, and conduct annual oral and written performance appraisals with each employee.

5) Assure that the Society’s administrative activities operate efficiently and without undue financial and/or operational risk and assure that all steps are taken so that Executive Committee and Board meetings are well organized, that information presented is clear, and that attendees are informed sufficiently in advance.

6) Serve as the day-to-day public face of the Society, representing the organization at programs and in other public outreach opportunities with members and others.

Qualifications:
Strong personal commitment to and enthusiasm for the Society’s mission to foster understanding and cooperation between Japan and the Bay Area

  • A record of demonstrated leadership and accomplishment as a manager or equivalent, responsible for revenue generation, expense management and achieving an operating surplus
  • A demonstrated record of successful fund raising which can be applied to the nuances of raising funds from current and potential Japanese and American supporters of the Society
  • Strong interpersonal skills, the ability to motivate and manage staff and work effectively with a diverse Board of Directors
  • Ability to present a favorable personal presence/gravitas consistent with the office, in-depth understanding of the Japan – U.S. relationship, and credibility within both the Japan and U.S. communities
  • Knowledge of the Bay Area and representation within this community are highly desirable
  • Strong written and spoken communication skills are required
  • Ability to interact favorably with senior American and Japanese executives and governmental officials as well as with the media
  • Cross-cultural skills and cultural sensitivity are required. Extensive knowledge of Japanese culture, government and business are essential. In-depth Japan related experiences, including having lived, studied and worked in Japan, Japanese language proficiency, strong personal relationships in Japan, etc., are highly desirable.

Salary and Benefits:
Salary dependent upon experience and qualifications, plus a bonus arrangement dependent on annual results achieved. Salary range available upon request. Health and dental coverage, generous vacation benefits, and the opportunity to participate in the Society’s 401K plan are included. Relocation assistance negotiable
