Overview:
Fuji Television, Japan’s largest commercial television network, through its US subsidiary, Fuji Sankei Communications International, seeks an Assistant News Program Director to assist with daily news coverage in our Washington, DC bureau.
The successful candidate will have a keen interest in international relations, US-Japan relations, the domestic politics of both the United States and Japan, and Japanese culture. He/she will also possess intermediate proficiency in speaking and reading Japanese. In addition, we seek a curious, forward-thinking individual who is able to work effectively under deadline, can digest significant amounts of information quickly, and works well with others.
Main duties:
Assist reporters in our DC bureau to cover daily briefings of various US Government agencies including the White House, State Department, Department of Defense, congressional hearings, and various think tank events, tracking and researching relevant stories, preparing memos on various news stories, simple videography, and transmitting video footage to our Tokyo Headquarters.
This is a unique opportunity to gain a thorough understanding of the broadcast journalism industry.
Daily tasks will include but are not limited to:
•Monitor daily news of various Washington, DC government agencies; attend press conferences, congressional hearings, government briefings, symposia, etc.
•Monitor news sources, AP and Reuters newswires websites, newspapers, magazines, and television broadcasts for current and breaking news.
•Collect information, set up interviews, and coordinate travel arrangements for any potential news projects or breaking news.
•Support reporter’s copywriting by assisting with translation of transcripts, news articles and other items (English/Japanese).
•Transmit video footage, to Fuji Television Network, Tokyo.
•Research news story ideas and create proposals for Fuji Television Network, Inc. and affiliates’ news programs.
•Travel with reporter and cameraperson to cover breaking news (sometimes on very short notice), presidential primary and general elections, and White House overseas travel.
•Occasional video shooting with hand-held digital camera and other recording devices.
•Drive automobile, company van or rental car to transport production/news crew and production equipment during breaking news, assigned location shoots or when necessary.
•Monitor and maintain in-house media equipment (fiber transmission, ENG, tapes, etc.) for condition and upgrade.
Qualifications:
•Bachelor’s Degree in Media/Communication or any other related fields
•English and Japanese language (speaking and reading)
•A valid driver’s license and passport
•Some travel and a flexible schedule are required. May be required to work overtime, including weekends.
