Overview:
The Japan Information Center (JIC) is the educational, cultural and public affairs division of the Consulate General of Japan in San Francisco serving Northern California, Central California and Nevada. Its primary role is to promote a better understanding and deeper appreciation of Japan and its culture by providing information and educational programs to the public. JIC facilities include an internal research library, multimedia archive, conference space and display area for Japanese cultural artifacts and artwork by Bay Area and Japanese artists.

The Japan Information Center of the Consulate General of Japan in San Francisco has an outstanding full time opportunity for a Cultural Affairs Coordinator. Interested applicants who meet the following eligibility criteria are invited to submit their applications to the JIC office.

Position Duties:
•As part of a two person team under the direction of the Cultural Attaché; plan, schedule, publicize, and implement cultural events and programs at the JIC and at partnering venues. Programs include in house exhibits and workshops, cultural and film festivals, cultural performances and traveling exhibits.
•Serve as a liaison between the Consulate and individuals, groups and cultural organizations for events and projects involving the Consulate.
•Write and edit greetings and general correspondence for the Cultural Attaché and other Consulate officials for Consulate related cultural events and programs.
•Help maintain the Consulate’s culture-related database and mailing lists.
•Planning, implementing and evaluating annual Japanese speech contests for K-12 and above.
•Manage the Consulate’s Audio-Visual department and library book collection.
•On occasion assist with special events at the Consul General’s official residence.
•Cooperate with other staff members on JIC projects as required
•Handle general Japan-related inquiries (via telephone, email, mail, in-person) from the public in both English and Japanese
•Participate in rotating general office duties (toban) such as telephone reception, general e-mail account maintenance and mail delivery.

Required Qualifications:

Successful candidates will possess the following qualifications:
•Three or more years of related work experience.
•A Bachelor’s degree.
•Strong communication and writing skills in English
•Proficiency in Japanese
•Interest in and knowledge of Japanese arts and culture
•Proficiency with standard office software, including the MS Office suite and social media.

Desired Qualifications:

Additional desired qualifications for this position include:
•Experience working in a Japanese office environment.
•Experience working with performers, and artists.
•Experience with event planning.
•Knowledge of Bay Area arts and cultural organizations.
