Overview
Established in 1907, New York’s Japan Society is an internationally recognized nonprofit, nonpolitical organization that provides access to information on Japan, offers opportunities to experience Japanese culture, and fosters sustained and open dialogue on issues important to the United States, Japan, and East Asia.
Vice President, External Relations: Reporting to the President, the Vice President of External Relations is responsible for coordinating communication between staff and the Board of Directors, and organizing regular Board Standing Committee meetings with a focus on strategic planning. He/she directs Japan Society’s fundraising operations, overseeing Corporate, Foundation and Individual Giving and Membership efforts, as well as the Society’s Annual Dinner and other Special Events. Working with Media and Marketing, he/she ensures Japan Society’s public face – online and through the media – is consistent with achieving the Society’s mission and fundraising goals. Partnering with the President and the Vice President of Finance and Administration, he/she plays a significant role in overall strategic planning and policy formation for the Society. He/she manages direct report staff of six and overall staff of 17.
The position requires an active, hands-on leader and team-builder with outstanding managerial, communication and relationship-building skills. The successful candidate must have demonstrated success in strengthening board, corporate and donor relations, and achieving measurable results in revenues generated or funds raised. He/she must have the executive presence to serve as an ambassador of the Society and partner to the President’s Office, and work collaboratively across all internal units of Japan Society.
Qualifications:
•Bachelor’s degree or higher, and a minimum of ten years senior-level managerial experience with expertise in strategic planning, board relations and development, fundraising, program-building, people and budget management
•Managerial experience in a non-profit institution required, experience with nonprofit corporate giving — membership and sponsorship – is highly desirable
•Experience with individual giving in the contemporary art world is a plus
•Superior written and verbal communication skills
•Excellent interpersonal and presentation skills
•Strong knowledge of Japanese business etiquette, customs and culture, and international issues
•Demonstrated ability to network and build external relationships
•Ability to manage staff and collaborate effectively with a diverse range of internal and external partners
•Willing and able to travel
•Spoken Japanese language ability is a plus
