Type: Full-time
Location: London, UK
Salary: N/A
Start Date: N/A
Overview:
The Marine Stewardship Council (MSC) works to safeguard the world’s seafood supply by promoting the best environmental choice, and is recognised internationally as a groundbreaking and credible solution to the serious environmental problem of overfishing.
The Japan Fisheries Manager is responsible for contributing to these overarching aims and objectives and works in collaboration with the other members of the regional and international teams to deliver a more focussed approach of key targets.
Reporting to the Programme Director Japan, the Japan Fisheries Manager is responsible for outreach to the fisheries sector (catchers, fisheries co-operative associations, government, fisheries research organisations, NGOs and companies) in Japan and, potentially, more widely in the region as resources allow. The primary focus is on promoting the MSC concept and certification programme to potential clients and increasing the support for the programme across a broad range of interest groups and stakeholders. The position supports clients as needed both during the MSC fishery assessment process and following fishery certification. Additional work will include research and analysis, understanding target fisheries and commercial linkage within those fisheries, relationship building, making presentations as needed, and essentially selling the MSC concept and use of the ecolabel to potential clients.
The job holder will be part of the MSC’s Asia and Pacific regional team and will participate in the collective strategic planning and development of the organization in the region.
Skills Required:
- 5 or more years of relevant experience in fisheries management, assessment, research or consultancy.
- Extensive knowledge of Japanese fisheries, and the seafood and fishing industries, with existing contacts and networks highly desirable.
- Relevant postgraduate degree, diploma or equivalent – a fisheries science or fisheries management qualification is an advantage.
- Evidence of an ability to successfully manage relationships with colleagues, stakeholders and collaborators, with a people-centred approach to business and work essential.
- Ability to travel on a regular basis, to work irregular hours, and to work effectively while traveling.
- Demonstrated proficiency in English.
- Demonstrated excellence in selling an idea or concept and winning support.
The post holder will need be a strategic thinker, able to grasp complex and intellectually challenging ideas and communicate them to people from diverse backgrounds and cultures. The job will require diplomacy, respect, sensitivity to differences and a willingness to listen, learn and treat people with dignity.
